What a 21-9 hoops record used to mean vs its current SEC worth

In 1987, when Mizzou was 21-9 as a Big Eight team, they went on to be a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament and ranked in the Top 25.

In 1992, when Mizzou finished 21-9 as a Big Eight team, they were a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament and ranked in the Top 25.

In 2003, when Mizzou was 21-9 as a Big 12 team, they went on to be a 6 seed in the NCAA tournament and finished ranked in the Top 25.

Right now, with a 21-9 record as an SEC team, Mizzou is on the outside looking in of all NCAA tournament projections and is not even remotely close to sniffing the Top 25.

Fellow Mizzou SEC conference mate Arkansas is also 21-9 and is just barely squeaking into the NCAA tournament in most projections as a double digit seed of 11 or 12, and is not even remotely close to sniffing the Top 25.

I pass no judgment on any of these facts other than that I am acutely aware of them.

The record is meaningless without knowing the competition.

You're about to go 9-9 in the SEC, so I'd suggest a long, hard look in the mirror.

In those three seasons you had a winning record in whatever conference it was. This year, not so much (yet...).

Yeah, but I can't help but recall that Mizzou is kind of seen, by their own fans, as choke artists in the NCAA Tourney. So it seems like 21 wins in the Big 8/12/whatever was highly overrated.

Only part that's important out of all that drivel.

I honestly think the media drives most folks to think that SEC basketball is the worst thing since AIDS. Could it be that the Hawgs beat SMU, Minnesota, Clemson, Kentucky x2, but because the majority of those wins were early in the season AND the Hawgs are part of the SEC, they really aren't that good?... Hey, I know the SEC is down and all, but a few of those wins do show that SEC schools can at least dribble the ball.

Honestly I think we'd have about the same record due to the way we play to the level of the competition and eke out close home wins, I think they'd still eke out close home wins over the Iowa States and Oklahoma States of the world this year just like they eked out close home wins over the Arkys, Tenns and UCLAs, and they'd still suck just as much on the road obviously in the Bevo 12 as they did this year in the SEC. They'd probably balance out to about 9-8 in that league too, but they'd be dancing.

I think its a combination of reputation currently with out of conference performance of the league as a whole. Mizzou and Arkansas did fine with the non-con scheds they had, but when our bros at LSU are dropping home games to Rhode Island and our pals at Ole Miss drop home games to Mercer and when South Carolina beats Kentucky but yet earlier lost at home to South Carolina-Upstate and Manhattan, it makes it hard for the outside world to say that the SEC quality of play is good. Much easier for outsiders to just say that any time Kentucky, Arky, Mizzou etc loses to one of those conference foes its just an indication that the former team is playing like sh** too. Thats a problem our league has the power to correct even if we can't control what people's opinons of the league are. We need to both have better non-con schedules for the whole league, but more importantly also the league MUST stop dropping non-con games to teams we've never heard of.

My team did the conference zero favors on this issue this year.

We were rolled badly in our pre-conference slate and, even if we won, it was against a horrible team in unimpressive fashion. We just looked/played absolutely horrid.

Then we immediately start racking up wins in conference, starting on the road at Mizzou. Doesn't help how others see SEC basketball, I'm afraid.

I mean yeah pretty much, although in Georgia's defense some of the non-con losses you guys took that looked bad at the time based on the name of the team are actually looking pretty good now. Nebraska is hot and surging to try to push into the NCAA tournament, George Washington who I think you guys lost to is having a really good season. There were still some bad losses in there as well but you guys didn't damage the SEC as much as some others. Part of the reason I was one of the only people who didn't have UGA ranked dead last when conference play started was that, that your losses weren't *quite* as bad. I had Miss State ranked dead last back when conf play started even though most people were buying into their deceptively decent non-con record, when you looked closer you saw they hadn't beaten *anyone* with a pulse, lost by double digits at home to a horrid TCU team, barely squeaked by nobodies like Jackson State etc.

All that said, yes UGA has been hurting a lot of bubble teams in the SEC this year. If our two losses against you were two wins instead we'd probably be projected to be in the Dance right now. Arky would be on safer ground without its loss in Athens, LSU would have more of a fighting chance without its loss to you and so on. Hopefully you guys build on this conference run next year and start off really well in the non-con.

I agree with a lot of this, but I don't think we would be 9-8 there. More like 8-9 or even 7-10. We'd have seven road games and I can pick out 4-5 teams that really could beat us at home.

OKie state is at 8-9 and they were out until they beat Kansas. If we had a win againt FL we would probably be in too.

I think either way it's the same team, and the record would adjust itself by a game or 2 in the bevo, and we would still be right where we are now on the back side of the bubble.

It's not the sec's fault, it's the team's

We'd be even better without a double digit loss in College Station, that's our only >100 RPI loss.
