Mash here for Blutarsky's sad revelation

quote:

… For Georgia, heat certainly plays a role, though the exact reason for the school’s precipitous decline in student attendance still seems to be a mystery. This year, the University of Georgia cut its student section capacity from 18,026 to 16,200. Despite overselling on purpose (17,212), the school’s scanners revealed this sad fact: An average of 28.8 percent of those who bought tickets didn’t show up to home games.

Benjamin Wolk, a senior at the school who is a football beat writer for the student newspaper The Red & Black, says one of the reasons for the no-shows is because of a stale game atmosphere that caters to the old money that wants the traditions of decades ago.

“One thing Clemson, Vanderbilt and Auburn all had in common was a crazy stadium atmosphere,” Wolk said. “At Georgia? Traditional music and a PA announcer barely yelling ‘Let’s make some noise ‘on third down.”

quote:

This, mind you, after a year in which Georgia played two of the most thrilling games I’ve had the pleasure of watching between the hedges. But evidently it takes a shot or three of fake juice to get Wolk’s generation motivated to put in an appearance.

quote:

“The problem is in all the other areas. There’s nothing to do while I’m waiting on line for an hour to get into the stadium, and there’s little added value from being in the stands watching the game.”

I knew this problem was bigger then I thought when they complained about no wifi in the stadium. Yo jackass watch the game and yell not your phone.

While it's pathetic that so many students don't show up, I do agree with him that the stadium environment could be modernized a bit to appeal to the younger generation of fans. That's not a good excuse for not showing up though.

GATA

and frick that student beat writer....he wants some pumped in garbage rap instead of the redcoats? traitor.

I was at the LSU and USCe game, and I would bet that those two games could match up with any in the country as far as atmosphere goes. the problem comes from scheduling all these sorry arse schools and then kickoff at noon. And its not just a UGA problem. Hell, i think Bama had some of the same issues.

When I went to UGA.. the problem was tons of student left during half time. Looks like it has gotten even much worse :(

If the students just aren't interested in going to the games, then there's no point in having empty seats because of them when non-students are still showing up in support.

Cut the amount of allotted student tickets and take the remainder and put it into a "flex section" where students get priority for x days leading up to that game and then any leftovers are sold to the general public.

They are trying to make this all to difficult. People don't NOT go to a game because of a lack of canned music or wifi access. There are two things that affect attendance:

1. Opponent
2. Time of Day

ETA: There are 3. I forgot weather.

The stadium experience is a shite show, that's why.

If I'm going to sit through a 4 hour game where 3 hours of that time is me staring at the sky, staring at the sand, then I damn sure better be able to go get a coke, an iced lemonade, a hot dog, and take a piss, and hit the ATM, and not have it take an hour. When I'm trying to get into the stadium, it shouldn't take 30 minutes. Getting into the LSU game at the Tate gate was fricking ridiculous. You ever go into a Walmart and the lines are all 10 deep and only 3 registers open, and you say "why the frick don't you open the other 29 registers?" That's what happened at the LSU game at that gate. There are what, 10 turnstyles there, and 3 were open, and they were searching everyone. We thought we'd go in 30 minutes early so we could get comfy and watch some pregame festivities, but we almost missed the damn kickoff.

Whoever runs the stadium should just be fired.

I've been to Away games at other stadiums and off the top of my head, Willy Brice was ran professionally. There was a line to get in but the line moved. Never more than 5 minutes in line at a concession. Same experience in Jacksonville, except at half-time. The way half-time is in Jacksonville is how Sanford is for the whole game. Complete incompetence.

People running around with their heads cut off with no idea what is going on.

Except security.... they are throwing people out left and right for trying to sneak a smoke in a corner somewhere. frick those people. A guy hiding in a corner somewhere chiefing down a camel light isn't bothering anyone. I watched these fricks utilize a sophisticated signalling scheme to track and bust people for smoking. I have never been busted there but that's because I'm smart and I know damn well better than to reveal my secret online.

At home, or even at a bar, I get cold drinks, I can watch other games during the 3 hours of the 4 hour game that the dawgs aren't playing, I can take a piss, and I can smoke them if Ive got them.

Increased wifi won't do shite except give people something to do during the 3 hours of the game that nothing is happening. The corporate fricks are turning football into baseball.

Well, I have avoided this thread because I have a novel to write about it but to put it simply I think it's just the student base. The kids at UGA before I got there, during, and after didn't all grow up fans like a lot of us did. Many of them are at UGA because of HOPE and a lot of other came for the part. UGA is great at partying but to people like us the football program is a part of the experience. Many people see the game as a social event, a reason to drink when in REALITY drinking is a PRIVILEGE we have in enhancing our football experience.

I feel like a lot of the kids who grew up loving Georgia didn't get in and have gone elsewhere. Kids who grow up loving AU, LSU, UA and etc don't have the same rigors to go through that Georgia fans do. I have lost count of students I knew who became Georgia fans AT Georgia. That's fine but the level of dedication simply isn't there. GDIs, hipsters, frat stars, all of them were just at Georgia games because it was the thing to do. shite, I had a kid in the STUDENT SECTION once ask me if I was gonna sit down the entire game. THE frickING STUDENT SECTION.

There was a UGA meme facebook group way back where one said "Sanford Stadium: Where the points don't matter and the party is always on" or something stupid like that and I know it shouldn't have but it enraged me. I grew up living and breathing Georgia football and I still do. To see kids just let these opportunities slip away so they could drink more from the keg just killed me inside. Hell, a lot of my friends who liked Georgia almost as long as me made decisions like that for shitty games.

It's a fricking shame but I was raised old school and I never missed a home game and only missed probably 5 away games while at Georgia. I just wish kids loved Georgia the way we all do. I don't think the music, wifi, or even beer will fix it because the kids will still say they'd rather drink cheaper beer, watch the game dt, or use their phone where it works. I say frick it, keep shrinking the student section, impose stiffer sanctions on frickers who don't sell the tickets, and most importantly fix the student section so it's one large section and not 3 different sections. THAT was always my biggest pet peeve with how UGA handles it. My freshman year up north the student section was all one section and the unity/camaraderie KILLED UGA
