It's not pointless at all. We didn't protect the trademark. If we fought them, we might have lost it altogether. By settling, it sets precedent that we own it and to use it you must license it through us. This limits any other use without our permission and would make another legal case a slam dunk.

Also, it's sort of odd, but the more it's talked about, the more it allows us to interject ourselves into a conversation which we wouldn't normally be part of. We hammered twitter yesterday on it and raised awareness of the Texas A&M brand. It's marketing 101. I doubt someone like Jason Cook would ever say so publicly, but it's a marketing bonanza for us.

Actually I'm pretty sure he said almost the exact thing you just said at one point last year. It gets our brand name talked about during NFL football games and at other times when we wouldn't be mentioned normally.

While 5k may be small, we are basically being paid by Seattle for them to advertise our brand.

My point is that if you asked a regular guy what the 12th man is, they're probably much more likely to associate it with seattle.

Also, it would be pretty sweet if it was free marketing, but I haven't once heard a&m mentioned alongside seattle when discussing their 12th man.

Just my feelings on it. Thought ags were getting straight paid.

I understand from a licensing standpoint that it's a major win, but how much money is a&m making from that?
