But Lane Kiffin is a very good hire for Alabama. His offenses at USC were jawdroppingly good, and Tennessee improved tremendously on offense. It's going to be tough to recruit against him too. My only concern would be how he works with the staff since he is largely unfamiliar with them. But overall, I think it's a solid hire. And you're welcome for another thread on Lane Kiffin.

And in 6 or 7 years he can be Saban's successor!

Last time (05) he was a standalone OC, USCw was easily one of the most prolific offenses in the history of college football
Bottom line is Saban really respects Lane and his eval and criticisms of Nuss when he came a few weeks ago is what prompted Saban to consider him for the job. He was the 1st name he called and only interview. It is a risky hire but the rewards could be massive. From all accounts his release from USCw pretty much humbled him and made him realize he has a specialty and possibly tried as a HC to do too much (this top year was a really great example). He crashed and burned as a HC there is no denying that but he is an offensive mastermind and a lightning rod recruiting wise (at a position where Bama had 2 non-factors with the last 2 OCs). I personally am excited to see the impact he has on our offense.

quote:You nailed it. My only worry is that because he carries an almost celebrity status, the mesh with the coaching staff could be complicated...but I trust Saban's judgement completely.

Sarkesian and 30 guys with first round talent (all of whom were paid for-- see vacated wins) can make a bad coach look good.

Tennessee improved tremendously on offense.
No it didn't. Aside from the 08 season, Tenn's offend was pretty prolific. Kiffin really didn't do anything to improve that.

Because he's a proven cheater. It's going to be tough to recruit against him, until you get slapped with sanctions because he pays players.

Legitimate concern, as it's probably difficult to get along with a spoiled brat.

Overall, I think you're wrong.

Lane Kiffin is a fantastic recruiter, a great quarterbacks coach, and an underrated offensive coordinator. The only way this turns out poorly for Alabama is if Kiffin can't adapt to being an assistant coach after being the head guy for the last 7 seasons.

X's and O's I'd say it's a solid hire but not a grand slam.
Just bizarre to me really. Everyone has to admit that if it turns out poorly they wouldn't be shocked.
It's made for good people watching all around to see the reactions though

As a big fan of Norm Chow I take issue with that opinion. The decline of USC began when Carroll allowed his jealousy of the attention Chow received to edge Norm out the door and replace him with lesser options.
By analogy LSU replaced Jimbo Fisher with lesser offensive coordinators who didn't develop QBs or players in general as well and the descent of the LSU offensive program hit hard by 2009

Huh? Are you retarded?
His offenses at USC were mediocre to shitty...2010-2013.
BTW, 2005 wasn't Lane Kiffin's offense. It was the Norm Chow/Pete Carroll hybrid offense...
Lane and Sark just got to call some plays. Lane didn't create jack shite.

Its the perfect opportunity for Kiffin to become relevant again. He will 1) have a lot of talent to work with, 2) wont have to be the top dog, and 3) will be out of the spotlight.
Lets be perfectly honest here for a second. The criticisms of Lane Kiffin have never been Xs and Os. They have been his lack of humility(which he was been humbled in a big way) and his lack of leadership.
At Bama, Saban is the clear leader. I would think that Kiffin has learned a lot from his mistakes and his failures.
Not that there isnt any, but I cant think of many other coordinators out there that fit what Bama does on offense and are obviously better Xs and Os coaches thank Kiffin.

I agree...I like the hire and have talked to several boosters and Alumni old and young and they like the hire as well and agree that a change was needed at OC.
I think the hire is a home run hire and Kiffin will fit right in with Saban and at Bama.

Except when he was HC there and didn't have Steve Sarkisian to help him.
