There was nothing wrong with the second half play calling. FSU was devoting everything to stopping the run up the middle, hence why Coates was able to get open on pass routes over the middle almost every play.

Marshall just didn't have a very good game. He made some bad reads on run plays, and the passing miscues were pretty obvious. On the interception he threw, he had a wide open receiver breaking over the middle as well. Auburn would have easily scored 50+ points had he played better. That throw and missing two wide open touchdowns cost the game.

The defense failed on the last drive, but overall it was their best performance of the season. Jameis is severely overrated.
