FWIW, airlines will be raising fares really quick between BHM and ATL and Socal.
They're no dummies and the people in charge of that area look for this stuff.
Remember there are multiple airports in Socal to fly into including LAX, SNA, ONT, LGB (not really from the south) and if you can drive it LAS isn't a horrible idea.

I may fly into San Diego and then drive the 100 miles to LA. San Diego is awesome.
