I also love the state of Missouri! My appreciation has grown even more, as I now live in another state.

You are new to the SEC. Spend some time studying the Cocks and get back to me. Try going with 1 win in 2 seasons and see if Tiger fans show up in volumes for beatings like that. Try putting up with legions of taterheads over decades of competition as the "little brother" of Clempson. Still they kept going and now they are reaping the milk and honey after decades of wandering the desert. Cocks are damn near biblical and you get wound up if you chip a fingernail.

That comes with being one of the few AAU schools in the SEC.

Lulz, someone has not seen the latest academic rankings. Mizzou ranking is closer to Kentucky's then Vandy's

Are there any SEC states as crappy as Missouri?

I mean, the likely candidates (LA, Miss, SC, AL) at least have coastlines. Tennessee has solid mountains.

Mizzou has...Taneycomo and St Louis?

For the record, as a Mizzou fan who grew up in Columbia, MO, I tend to hate posts like the OP's. Ridgewalker and others have the right, certainly, to take pride in their pro sports' teams accomplishments. Personally, I just don't care about Cards baseball or Chiefs football all that much. I am pleased when they win, but don't watch religiously and couldn't name the full roster for either, not even close. I grew up in Columbia MO living and breathing Mizzou sports, and if I say those pro sports teams from cities an hour and a half away are "my" teams too I'd just be bandwagon.

To me, the pro sports teams in Missouri have always been a major obstacle to getting the whole state truly passionate and religous about following Mizzou sports first and foremost, which is what I'd like to see in a perfect world. Do I like having major cities in the state so that we don't have a small population like Arkansas or Mississippi? Absolutely. But do I envy the way that the flagship universities in those states dominate the sporting consciousness of their populations? Absolutely. Seeing STL Cardinal hats all over the crowd at Mizzou home games, or having the Mizzou crowd sing "and the home of the CHIEFS!" during the national anthem at Mizzou home games, is a bit...well, like I say, not my perfect world. Just one fan's take.

We have the Missouri wine country along the river in eastern MO. This is actual old school wine country from before prohibition, not the noob wannabe wine countries that every state has nowadays. It's gorgeous and that is really not debatable.

Also, given the sheer volume of people from surrounding and even far off states who not only vacation at the Lake of the Ozarks but in many cases own condos there, it must not suck much either.

With nearby paradises like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa and Illinois, I must say I'm impressed.

And SEC states Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee but don't let that stop you.

But thanks for letting me know what states my home borders, golly I'd never noticed that until you enlightened me. Only thing is, those are other places, not MO. Should we judge Florida by its proximity to Cuba too?

I'd actually go the other direction and say that publicly-funded academic institutions should not be in the sports entertainment business, but that's just me.

That is actually beautiful.

I have driven the length of Missouri a couple of times in the past few years. Before that, I had been to Branson and back and that was it.

I am warming up to Missouri as a state and as a people. Give me some time. Like JFF, I'm worth it.

Though privately funded rather than publicly, Vandy tried that line of thinking for awhile, did away with having a formal athletic department, whole shabang. It didn't work out. They caved and are now fully back in the sports entertainment business while their players are rapin' everybody out here.

MIT doesn't have an athletic department and it works out pretty well. Students actually play more sports because they spend less time watching them.

I don't expect publicly-funded sports entertainment to go away any time soon, but it is worth pointing out that the US is the only nation on the planet that does this to its academic institutions. In other countries they have development leagues. I think it would be better for the academic institutions if we privatized these sports teams and let the teams succeed or fail on their own merit rather propping them up with tax dollars. Maybe the cost of education wouldn't go up as quickly, too.
