I didn't say territory. Obviously, they are bordering 2 states with very rich high school talent. I never once said they couldnt' drive 3 hours and find anyone they need. I was strictly talking about the state.
And if that isn't a reason, why would they not be top 10, IYO?

The problem with that graph is that it's going by a per capita percentage. That doesn't mean shite. Coaches don't recruit states based on the percentage of recruits of the total state population are good. They look at the overall frickin number.
No. It's not. The numbers at the bottom are per capita. The actual spreadsheet is simply gross production.

Dye left Wyoming for it
Tubbs left Ole Miss for it.
Petrino would have left Louisville
Chizik left Iowa State for it
Malzahn left Arkansas State for it
You don't see many coaches leaving Auburn to go to elsewhere so why not be a top10 school.

Dear God yall are hung up on that phrase. Ok fine..I TAKE IT BACK! I MISSPOKE! Let me try again..
Well you used it as one of your talking points and would you say the phrase of"virtually no recruits" it a decisive statement?
quote:
their instate recruiting ground is not as fertile as a handful of other states that contain coaching jobs that I would personally rank above Auburn
So four or five states states? in talking about a top 10 list

Yes I'm aware, we discussed that about 2 or 3 pages ago.

Overzealous/hindering administration is the only negative I can put on AU's football program, and even that has gotten better from what I can tell.

Does it not occur to you that Auburn is a better job than every other school on that list?
UGA hasn't had a coach leave for another school since the 30s, btw.

quote:Again, the state ranks very high, but that is irrelevant to the larger discussion of whether AU is a Top 10 coaching job. The only relevant factor would be the larger picture of whether or not they had a convenient and rich natural recruiting territory.
I was strictly talking about the state.
quote:Because there are other schools with similar arguments to be made for top 10 and AU is in the argument with those schools but not clear cut ahead of them.
why would they not be top 10, IYO?
Whether it be due to rich tradition, financial commitment, etc. AU is somewhere in a group of about 10-12 programs just below the elite jobs of places like UA, UT, OSU, and USC.

Eugene, Oregon is a loooooooooooong way from SoCal. Still sucks for those coaches to recruit, even flying in Phil's jets.
For contrast, see: Texas. It *looks* big, but it really isn't. A box drawn from Houston, up 59 to Longview, over on 20 to DFW, down 35 to Austin and then SA, then back east to Houston on I-10 would contain or connect 80% of the state's population. East of 59 is a jungle, west of 35 is the desert, the panhandle is Kansas, and south of I-10 is scrub brush Mexicoland. All you have to recruit is that box, which is, eh, roughly the size of Louisiana.

And once again, in state recruiting is but one of a handful of factors I would take into consideration if I were a head coach. Just because alabama may have better recruits than the state of Indiana doesn't make AU a better job than Notre Dame.

Wish I could say the same for LSU :/
Sits back and waits for the big fish

There don't have to necessarily be negatives towards Auburn, just other schools having more positives.

No, have you ever been to Auburn Alabama? It kinda sucks. Just a college town out in the middle of cow pastures.
I wouldn't put LSU up that high either. Replace the top 2 with Texas and USC.

And Brunswick folks know a cow pasture when they see one.
