RE: drinking. Because I am a high functioning alcoholic and realize this is important (and because I've been to shitty Ole Miss which is 10 kinds of weird about it) -
You can't just take your drink out of the bars and wonder around like you can in New Orleans. BUT you can just take beers or liquor bottles out anywhere on campus on gameday and drink. Northgate, the bar district, is directly across the street from campus. What I do on game days is pay to park in the Catholic lot, because they're cool about how long you leave it there, walk to NG with whoever I am with, get a few drinks from a bar to fortify myself, buy some beer from the gas station right there, cross the street, then crack the beer open and start walking to the tailgate. Then I get to the tailgate and I'm home free. The reason why it's a good idea to beer-up for that walk is that A&M's campus is fricking huge and you pretty much have to cross the whole thing to make it to the tailgates.
Just FYI, Aggies camp out and stake out those Spence Park tailgate locations like fricking hawks. I highly doubt that you'll get one. My rec is, early early Saturday, drive over to the West Campus area, (across the RR tracks) and set up under one of the trees that line the roadsides there. Also, you can get your stuff into H Lot ahead of time, without a pass for that lot, so long as you don't actually keep your truck in there, and set up in one of the tree lined parking lot medians.
