Watch the 30 for 30 "Pony Excess"...the old SWC wrote the book on buying players and Oklahoma recruits the same player. Barry was known for being very agressive in that dept. Everyone did it and it was a wink, wink amoungst alumni. In fact, with all the money flying around back then, there was somewhat of a competition between programs to get the player at any cost. (for the record I played against and lived 22 miles from Erick Dickerson)

But, don't feel bad the SEC caught on and caught up in the late '80's...See Harvey Williams A&M / LSU.

The final 3 IIRC were Chokelahome, Southern Miss and Alabama. Alabama was chasing Dupree as their first choice giving Pat Dye too much of an opening to chase his top choice (Bo Jackson). Ken Donahue was in charge of recruting Jackson and he was no match for Pat Dye. In the end, Alabama missed out on both.

So Harvey Williams = all of the SWC/Big 8 cheating that took place for decades?

lulz - get real.

Sure, there were some schools that cheated, and there were a lot of them doing it. Bama and Tennessee especially at one time. The ACC's taterheads were probably, on record speaking, the biggest cheaters of all time in terms of money, goods and services changing hands.

But in no way has the SEC EVER equaled the old SWC and the Big 8 in terms of top-to-bottom cheating. Don't try the deflection management bullshite aTm fan.

This guy really has some heartburn about Aggies. Would the Aggie who stole his girlfriend and his dog please identify himself?

BTW chickenman, don't be so smug. All schools have committed NCAA violations. The reason is was so publicized in the SWC was caused by the hiring of Jim Wacker at TCU. When he was hired, he said his school never cheated. TCU was the first school in the era that was placed on probation by the NCAA.

The other schools quickly supplied all of their information to the NCAA and Wacker got wacked almost immediately.

Then schools started turning in the other schools and soon Rice was the only one left standing.

If you don't think that stuff went on in the ACC, SEC or whatever conference USCe was a member in those days you are really naive.

Damn, if Durpee had gone to Bama, I imagine the Bear would have stayed a few years (and yes, I believe coaching was what kept him alive in those last years.)

Meh ... more *aggie deflection management. Same old same old.

Sure, everyone did something, but no one did it to the extent of the old SWC from top to bottom. The taterheads (of Clemson) were, and are, well known as the worst cheaters, when it came to recruiting, in the entire Southeast - but they were the exception to the rule in these parts. Whereas, and let's call a spade a spade, in the state of Texas plus the attachment of Oklahoma y'all took it to a new, deceitful and criminal level.

(SEC programs never deny their cheating years - they own them, they wear them with pride.)

But aTm was just as bad as SMU, Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, etc. Only Baylor stayed within reasonable limits of acceptable cheating at the time.

Football's dirtiest, most tainted, cheatinest scum bag programs - #3 Texas A&M, or, if you'd rather, The 25 dirtiest scum bag football programs of all time - #7 Texas A&M.

So Dupree killed Bear Bryant?. No wonder that guy seemed so sad in his documentary.

Why did he have no interest in SEC schools? I would have though the Mississippi schools would have been all over him, as well as Alabama.

You must be young... When he was playing the Heismans and NCAA Championships were going to tailbacks at Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska... You also knew you were going to get 30 carries a game in the triple option. The SWC and the Big 8 were the 800 lb gorillas in the room that was NCAA football.
