Neither has Sumlin......

Gus Malzahn has led offenses that faced a Willy Robinson led defense at Arkansas that was not very good.
In 2008 with Tulsa at Arkansas, his offense scored 23 points in a loss.
In 2009 with Auburn at Arkansas, his offense scored 23 points in a loss.
in 2010 with Auburn and most importantly, Cam Newton, his offense scored 65 points in a win.
in 2011 with Auburn at Arkansas his offense scored 14 points in a loss.
3 tries without Cam Newton his offense scored a COMBINED 60 points.
I figure this year Auburn will score about 14 in another ugly loss to the Razorbacks.

I just don't get the fascination with Malzahn. Dude is only six years removed from being a HS coach in Arkansas, has four years of BCS conference coaching experience (none as a HC) and of those four only two (2006 Arkansas and 2011 Auburn) would be considered successful. In those two seasons, he ran completely differet offensive schemes with legendary players at RB and QB. He has never had a great offense in a BCS conference without a transcendent player who will remembered forever.
Yeah, you didn't see that 2009 Auburn team. Pretty fun team to watch when they had it going. They really pushed that 2009 Bama team in the Iron Bowl even though they were pretty outmatched.
The '11 offense was OK but it was obvious Chizik was slowing the game down some...QB play that year was pretty bad and Dyer was in and out of the lineup for obvious reasons.
He gets to run the offense on his own terms now. Should be interesting.
I think 7 wins is pretty accurate. Auburn will be much, much better than last year but it might not show due to the competition in the SEC West right now.

Malzahn would probably be happy to show Sumlin his National or SEC championship rings
Maybe he can also see Chizik's

His play calling and adjustments were terrible that game.
The play calling on the last two series were horrendous, time management was also Miles like.
eta. OP- So much depends on QB for AU this year, but I'm guessing 5-6 wins with no big upsets.

His play calling was the only reason we were in that game to begin with. Bama got exposed by an average AU team that year, and was losing that game for 58 mins. Saban scared

After WSU we will know where they are headed.
I think they will be a much better team the last third of the season.
And have a shot at a bowl.

quote:IDK about that. Maybe after the MSU game. Leech is going to be flinging the ball around more than anyone else we play. Plus the defense isn't good enough to tell how good our offense is going to be unless we suck it up. All with it being our first game with the new staff.
After WSU we will know where they are headed.

you realize it was tied at half time?

but Malzahn will handily beat Arkansas and will cause one aneurism in Saban before Smart pulls out a harder-than-expected victory.

Not really, Auburn's defense broke and couldn't maintain their intensity to make a stop at the end. Remember AU was playing the eventual NC with a badass defense. I would say Gus called a pretty good game and put AU in a position to win.

Perhaps defensive players were looking forward to the SEC Championship the following week considering they had the division wrapped up.

I give credit to the DC for that game, he had a great plan and got his boys to execute very well.
AU as a team played an inspired game and did well against a very good Bama team. I just don't think the credit goes to OC. His game plan was average at best and his play calling was less than stellar. The last two series of the game on offense were as bad as it gets.

I will give you the last few plays didn't go well, but that defense was a good one and your DC made some great adjustments.

Love how this thread was created to talk about Auburn yet it's really just a sad attempt at criticizing Saban. Man up and post old-school style and stop denigrating yourself.

Everyone focuses on Cam for 2010. Auburn had a really good, really experienced OL. Their success this year will depend on how they do up front again.
Gus won with Chris Todd. Think about that for a bit before you bury AU.
