Bama fans - Question about Saban's first season

Was just looking where the Tide started 6-2 in 2007 and lost their last 4 including of course the stunner to ULM and a 6th straight loss to Aub.
At that point, with the way Saban had not faired to well in the league (apples to oranges, I know) and with a pretty disappointing finish to the season, what were some of yall's own thoughts about Saban and the direction of Bama football?

It was a matter of when, not if. He was already putting together a #1 class. There were glimpses of what was to come, during that 2007 season. But Kine's 4-2-5 defensive roster couldn't muster much in a 3-4 scheme. Shula didn't leave much offensively either. No really offensive line depth and no real, healthy talent at RB.

Knew it was headed in the right direction. 7 points was the largest loss out of all those, which was a big improvement. I called a 10 win season the next year on this board. I was pleasantly surprised by 2 more than that.

That was my first year at BAMA... as you could imagine, the students were very pissed off about the (4)straight losses--especially the loss to ULM and Auburn. However, most students/fans realized in 2007 that it would only be a matter of time before Saban would have BAMA competing at a high level again.
Fast forward to 2008. BAMA fans realized that if John Parker Wilson could lead a Saban coached team to an undefeated regular season, the future looked very bright at The Capstone.

I just chalked it up into not having the type of high quality character kids.
I also felt, at the time, that the La Monroe game was thrown just like UAB at LSU. I thought, an embarrassing loss that leads to a NC...I'll take it.

Well as an Auburn fan, I can tell you the reality of it. Alabama fans were TERRIFIED about the potential 7th straight loss to their #1 hated rival. The only thing that gave them hope was the momentum they had in recruiting, but even then, they weren't sure they were ever going to climb out of their mid-major status.

Disappointed, but not worried.
I did not expect an undefeated regular season the very next year though. I was probably thinking a 9-10 win season.

I think most going into the season expected 5+ losses, but then, out of nowhere we open 6-2 and lead LSU in the 4th Quarter. Then, people really thought it was going to be easier than we originally thought. I don't think anyone was particularly happy, but it was a "wait 'til next year" kinda season. The bowl win really helped our morale, I think.

Personally, I'm willing to give any coach a pass on the first year.
And honestly, I was just hoping he could find a qb somewhere. JPW scored more points for opponents than the margin of defeat (int's or fumbles returned for touchdowns, or inside the 20 that led immediately to a touchdown) six different times in two years.
I complained so much about Wilson's performance, that it never even occurred to me that Saban might have been the reason for the poor showing.

Saban was a proven coach and everyone knew that team was full.of knuckleheads. Didn't know Bama would be this successful but expected to be competitive.

Did you just complain in the thread about AU's "six straight wins" about Alabama fans posting in it. And what you just vomited on the key board.

Yea for sure.
Some good responses up in here. It's crazy really, one 7-6 season with some uncharacteristic losses then BOOMMOTHERfrickER.
Shows you what can happen with the right coach, AD, and situation. Yes and the rabid fanbase of Bama obviously helps.

The jump from 2007 to 2008 was not as great as the jump in records, though the 2008 team was obviously better. 2007 played markedly tougher competition during the season than 2008 did.
The SEC West in 2008 was vintage late 90s style. Everybody but Bama sucked that season.

quote:Whatever happened to Terry Grant? I remember his leading Alabama in rushing in 2007, then Glen Coffee, Mark Ingram, and Roy UpChurch jumped ahead of him in carries and yards the following season. Did he just not fit the mold of what Nick Saban sees in a running back or did he get injured?
no real, healthy talent at RB.

I was pissed and ready to beg Shula to come back.

That's the ticket. We were a 7-6 team in 12-2 disguise. 21-0, 2009, 2011, and 2012 were all just a big mirage.
