Jim Dunaway?@jimdunaway2h Crimson&White (Alabama SchoolNewspaper) reports only 69% of student tickets were used in 2012-AD wants answers. Um, sell to fans who'll show
They're debating on WJOX right now as to whether Freshman should be placed in the Upper Deck so that more fans and donors can be seated in the lower level due to lack of student participation
If schools start going this route the next complaint you will have is of an awful Gameday atmosphere because 40 year olds arent going to body paint and stay energized throughout the game

The Upper Deck should not be part of the student section

Fortunately, we don't have that problem at A&M. There's a reason our student section at the games is so large.

Agreed.
They don't sit there anyway. They cram into the low student section. I say expand that student section in the lower section and sell the upper deck to donors / general ticket sales.

I'm all for Bama's stadium atmosphere going down even more.

There's more money to be made in the lower sections otherwise I would think everybody should be happy with this

Get the students involved, and they'll donate $$ when they're old. Rinse, repeat, profit

UGA had the same issue and is giving a few thousand student seats specifically for new alums (0-5 years out of school)
pretty good idea to get the younger alums donating and in the stadium, especially if students aren't showing up

But seriously, if you kick the students out to make money then just go ahead and contract with the NFL to form a developmental league because its no long about the "student experience" but about appeasing big money boosters and looking good for tv contracts

A lot of this has to do to block seating. All of the frats have an exclusive section of seating behind the goalpost, and all of the other students have to find another place to sit, which is usually around the band or that upper bowl.A lot of the non frat kids get pissed off because if Bama is beating the hell out of someone, most of the frat kids and their dates leave at half-time to go get (even more) drunk, which leaves a lot of empty seats that stay empty for the rest of the game. Also most kids don't want to walk all the way up to the nose bleeds.

I have mixed feelings on this being a student at Michigan State. While it doesn't feel like being in the SS, I have to admit, I've gotten some great views of the game being up there (as long as it's within the first 10 rows).

All of this is an issue but why not penalize the frat stars? Because they're apart of the "Southern Charm" of the SEC and look good for the cameras
Also, I agree regarding the upper level seats. I don't like sitting high. . . However, like the poster said earlier make these sections part of public seating and split the lower levels between donors & students. These tickets usually end up on the secondary market anyway but not the school gets 100%
This might also give more opportunity for more fans to come to the better games that previously could not afford to so

This type of situation has seemed to get more attention recently, but you can't get rid of student tickets. That's part of what being a student (and likewise, a college football game) is about. The solution shouldn't be to strip away student tickets and give them to the public, it should be to change student ticket policies.

Yeah they won't get penalized. Not at Bama. And nothing says "Southern Charm" like a bunch of drunken red faced frat guys. At the end of the "Game of the Century" in 2011 most of the frats were throwing cups and shite onto the field. You can kinda see them on tv too. I'm not saying it was every one of them, but if a group of students are gonna embarrass the school on tv like that then something should be done.
A good bit of the upper level is general seating. Also most of the visiting team's fan sit up there as well. It's only a small section that is for students. (I think its used for overflow). But yeah most people at Bama are actually wanting to sell the unused student tickets to the general public. I hope they do. That empty section is an eyesore.
But yeah like I said earlier its mostly (not all) the kids who sit behind the goal post who leave early, you can't really say it's wasted seats when they all did buy a ticket. I think the only way to solve this is by making that section open to the all of the students.
By the way this whole issue has been discussed here at Bama for a LONG time. It's kinda divided the students, and it mainly boils down to the whole "Greeks vs GDI's" thing here on campus, with the Greeks getting their way.

Y'all GDIs need to quit whining and sit in the crappy seats where you belong.
