Yes but they would have been smart enough to hire Brian Kelly instead.

Fulmer needed to go. Kiffin didn't need to get hired and Dooley sure as shite shouldn't have been hired. It was been an endless snowball of dumpster fire since Fulmer was canned, but that was the last good decision Tennessee made.

Fulmer was fired at the right time, it's just that Kiffin and Dooley hire turned out to be as abysmal as it can get.
What if UT hired a good coach?

Yes. Should have been fired after 05.

In hindsight yes he should've been fired in 05 but when you think about the situation we were in there was no reason to think it wouldn't turn around. In fact it did somewhat we came very close to winning the SECCG in 07
Add to those facts that we would've looked ridiculous firing a guy for one losing season in like 15 years would have made the job less appealing and made us look like jackasses

The only reason we got back after 2005 is because we re-hired Cutcliffe. We were better in 2006 than we were in 2007. Coach took the Duke job and we shite the bed again. Go figure

Hugo, Fulmer knew that he would be judged by his record against Bama. When he took over for Majors, Tennessee hadn't beaten Bama since 85. Fulmer then sprung seven in a row. Tennessee fans loved his portly arse for that. I said once he lost two in a row to Bama, he'd be gone. Tennessee benefited off the rest of the conference being relatively down besides Florida and Auburn. LSU came on strong after 2001 also. When Georgia closed UT outta their state recruiting it made it tough for Fulmer. Tennessee needs a better recruiter than coach right now imho. Good thread man.

I agree but are you suggesting we would've have been just as good had we fired Fulmer, probably lost Chavis and others, and hired Cutcliffe as HC in 05 we would have been as good as we were with Fulmer as HC in 06-07? I don't

Should have kept him on and hired his next successor to be a coordinator under him for a few years.
Posted on 2/20/13 at 6:37 pm to Hugo Stiglitz
I think Tennessee should of stayed with him for at least another year. That way they could of spent more time evaluating coaches because it doesn't take but one game nfl or college to figure out Lane Kiffin is just a mediocre coach. Dooley was simply UT's 7th choice as head coach. And the guy they have now may not be the answer either.

The vols screwed up.. Should have done it like FSU with the coach in waiting and found a way to kick Phil to the curb or make him an administrator.

I think they would, but they sure as frick wouldn't have hired Kiffin or Dooley.

Precisely why I don't understand the people in Baton Rouge with itchy trigger fingers re: Les Miles.
I have no idea what Alleva has shown them to give them any reason to have any faith in his ability to hire a better coach.
Mark Emmert told Joe Dean to sit the frick down and hired Saban. Understandable if you knew Joe Dean's track record. Emmert ain't here no more.
Skip Bertman hired Miles. Not a home run like Saban but the Skipper has no reason to hang his head re: hiring Miles.
How do I know Alleva isn't as clueless as Joe Dean was at selecting coaches? The only thing Alleva has demonstrated so far is an ability to give Miles more money.
