Were they really better off without him?

Thoughts?

I doubt it. They should have kept him, IMO.

Letting Fulmer go wasn't the problem... hiring two idiots afterwards (and possibly a third) is the problem.

I think they'd keep him if they could do it again but then again I don't have any faith in their AD making smart decisions

This. Fulmer was getting stagnant and they needed a change, the issue now is that they hired 2 bufoons instead. I mean think about if UT hired someone like a Saban and bama made a blunder hire, or held onto shula. The cfb landscape would be totally different.

Btw this is a major reason why I think it would be foolish to fire Richt (one of many reasons). There isn't anyone out there that is DEFINITELY an upgrade and a better option.

Tennessee under Fulmer's last 4 years: 29-21, 1 East title, 3-1 vs Vandy, kept streak vs UK alive

Tennessee in the 4 years since Fulmer: 23-27, 0 divisional titles, 3-1 vs Vandy, lost streak to UK

Fulmer was fired at the right time, it's just that Kiffin and Dooley hire turned out to be as abysmal as it can get.

What if UT hired a good coach?

Tennessee and Auburn both saw the writing on the wall in 2008. Their biggest rival was about to start dominating and they needed to make a change because they felt both of their coaches were way past their prime and wouldn't be able to recruit against Saban. Both made poor coaching hires in hindsight (though I don't think any Auburn fan would trade 2010 for the world).

Omrebelfan's alter was terrible. He had the exact same avatar and sig as his normal account. How he didn't get called out on it, I don't know.

Tennessee is serving as a cautionary tale right now. I actually think it's part of the reason Richt wasn't fired after the 2010 season.

With that said, UT needed a change. Their program wasn't going anywhere. The subsequent bad hires created the dumpster fire in Knoxville.
