I think Bama didn't hire Croom because they knew whoever they brought in was going to have a tough time doing well with the sanctions and probation. They didn't want to bring in the first African American coach, have him fail miserably and then have to fire him. It was easy to fire Shula.

Worked out well. State did something to the first black coach in SEC history that they never would have done to one of their other coaches in the same scenario.

I think if Bear had a say in things, he would have chosen Croom.

The most reasonable (and least ) is that both were seen as "meh" hires, but the powers that be thought that Shula's name may get him a little more cred on the recruiting trail.

Basically, it was a daddy thing.

Epic read; would carve into stone tablets, passing them down through the ages until they were lost in time, living on through the pages of the sacred text of the world's largest organized religion.

...and perhaps throw them down if I see people worshipping a 14K calf on my way down with them.

A few bama posters on here have posted some "behind the scenes" stuff but for the life of me I can't remember. Supposedly, Croom all but had the job locked up, and bama really did want to hire him, but something happened (and no I don't think it was race related) that made them go in another direction. I can't remember all the details though, someone (maybe genro?) posted about it a few weeks ago in a thread.

Trying hard, you still need to go back to that other thread and explain to me how Relf was highly recruited.

Shocking that a State fan would disparage Relf.

You told me that he was just has heavily recruited as TR, I want to know how you came to that conclusion since you "refuted my point" by making the claim.

I hated Relf. Except against Ole Miss, he seemed to have their number Every time he threw the ball I cringed in fear of the ball almost always being overthrown. Kid had to have had the most inconsistent accuracy I've ever seen.

You can't read. I never said that, even though I don't know it to be either true or false.

ETA: It appears to me that they were both recruited by the same schools but Russell had an additional offer from USC. I'm not a recruiting guru though.

You said he isn't like the other guys because he was recruited highly. I showed you that so was Relf.

They were recruited by the same schools and you are arguing offers. You said Tyler would have had more but he didn't. The schools were very similar. You still can't read.

Just admit you are dogging on Relf for the same reason you dog on Croom and we can get this thread back on track.

His only offer was MSU. Russell had offers from USCe, MSU, and Alabama.

Relf

Russell

Depends on who you ask

It also doesn't matter. Relf held him off most of his career at State.

We played much better last year with Russell starting, that's why he started after LSU until he hurt his knee dumb arse.

You are allowed to think Tyler Russell is good. It is hilarious and sad, but you are allowed. Just know Relf led your biggest offensive outputs last year.

The argument was over recruiting. It doesn't matter because you are wrong now too, stats don't lie. If you are going to tell me Tyler Russell isn't a good QB than there is literally nobody in the nation you can call good that isn't playing for Alabama right now. He has consistently gotten better every game this season, I'll take the 17/21 with 3 TD's and 0 INT's that he had this week any day.

and what about this year? In SEC play Russell has made Mettsiah look like a scrub.

Russell:
66 out of 105(62.9%) for 782 yards, 7 TDs and 0 INTS

Mett:
49 out of 106 (46%) for 572 yds, 1 TD and 2 INT
