Why did Alabama pass on hiring Sylvester Croom in 2003?

I feel bad for Croom. Anyone who watched the ESPN special on him knows that State gave him a raw deal because if his ethnicity. Then State fans try to use him in a wayward attempt to flame another SEC team. I guess old habits die hard.

bama passed over one mediocre coach to hire another mediocre coach. i really don't see why bama gets raked over the coals for taking shula over croom. either option would have ended with the same result. better to keep jesse jackson off your campus when the guillotine drops.

I can't really imagine Shula knocking it out of the park.

I guess he's a completely different character behind closed doors.

Alabama has won twice as many national titles in the past 3 years than miss state has won SEC titles in their history...

I think Bama didn't hire Croom because they knew whoever they brought in was going to have a tough time doing well with the sanctions and probation. They didn't want to bring in the first African American coach, have him fail miserably and then have to fire him. It was easy to fire Shula.
