Why did Alabama pass on hiring Sylvester Croom in 2003?

He really wanted that job.

Because really wanting something doesn't mean you're really good at it.

Because he was the same color as this helicopter hovering in your grindtastically dumb post.

I feel bad for Croom. Anyone who watched the ESPN special on him knows that State gave him a raw deal because if his ethnicity. Then State fans try to use him in a wayward attempt to flame another SEC team. I guess old habits die hard.

Because he is the worst coach ever

It would have been impossible to do this in 2003.

We grinded him, the Saban processed him out of State.

Croom chose the better school.

bama passed over one mediocre coach to hire another mediocre coach. i really don't see why bama gets raked over the coals for taking shula over croom. either option would have ended with the same result. better to keep jesse jackson off your campus when the guillotine drops.

He bombed his interview.

I can't really imagine Shula knocking it out of the park.
I guess he's a completely different character behind closed doors.

Alabama has won twice as many national titles in the past 3 years than miss state has won SEC titles in their history...

I think Bama didn't hire Croom because they knew whoever they brought in was going to have a tough time doing well with the sanctions and probation. They didn't want to bring in the first African American coach, have him fail miserably and then have to fire him. It was easy to fire Shula.
