Ol' Ball Coach deserves much praise as one of the top coaches in SEC history

I would probably put him at #2 all time right behind Bear Bryant.
He took a doormat program at Florida that had 0 SEC championships before he got there (1984 vacated), and turned them into a powerhouse. He won 6 SEC titles in 12 seasons. He won a national title and played in a couple other NC games.
He now has taken another doormat program and turned them into a top 5 team. Nobody thought he would be able to compete for SEC championships at USCe.

Don't forget, before he took the UF job, he was winning at DUKE

Amazingly enough, guess who I wanted hired in 2008 after Tubs was canned?
Muschamp, and then Spurrier...
We got Chizik.

May have been doormat in state before his arrival but far from SEC doormat.

UF wasn't exactly a doormat. they were decent in the 80's. USCe I agree it was a huge turnaround. they still have several years to go before they reach .510 all time win percentage

It has taken him some time, but he has built USCe into a very very good team.
When all of my fellow Hog fans keep implying that we can never field a competent defense, I use USCe as an example of what can be done. Sure Clowney is crazy good, but Spurrier has continued to insist upon solid play on the defensive side of the ball. Something Petrino neglected to our detriment.
My hat is off to him and to the entire USCe team. You guys play real SEC fb. Great job

I will not admit it. Same deal with Saban.

one could easily vote him above the bear. bryant's era was easier to win it all; at least half of bama's nc's are made up and includes years they lost their bowl game. not counting te 10 game seasons. i'm not knocking him; he DOESN'T NEED the BOGUS accolades but south carolina is a hell of a lot tougher place to win than alabama.

I agree. Spurrier's definitely a top 5 SEC coach of all-time.
1. Bryant
2. Neyland
3. Saban
4. Vaught
5. Spurrier

What's also impressive about Spurrier is he's had to change his philosophy in order to be successful at USCe. Most coaches won't. The offense he runs at USCe looks nothing like what he ran at Florida IMO.

What impresses me most is that he's smart enough not to let his ego get in the way of his coaching.
At Florida he had the Fun N Gun, the forerunner to the spread offenses of today. The SEC landscape changed defensively, and he adapted.
In his initial stages at USC, he tried to air it out, but he never had the right pieces to do it successfully, and he adapted accordingly.
Now, he's a ball control coach with a suffocating defense. I get hard ons for defense, and he's a freaking chameleon coach that goes with the flow.
Here's to you, OBC.
