BBQ: C&J's is really good. Rudy's is good but more of a franchise place. One of my favorite places to eat that's off the beaten path so to speak is Shipwreck Grill in Bryan.

Here is also a great website about visiting A&M as well:

Dont listen to this man. Fargos is the only one worth a shite. The others are like poop on a platter unless you dont have tastebuds. Then they rule.

Yeah, just avoid the BBQ if you're a connoisseur

top suggestions for things to see on campus

I'll go for this part.

Depending on when you are coming in, I wouldn't miss Midnight Yell. Its of course at midnight at Kyle Field. You'll see 20k-40k students on the student side practicing yells for the next day. Its one of the things that makes A&M unique. A 'pep rally' that big is a sight to behold.

Bonfire Memorial on the Polo Fields on the northeast side of campus. My wife will not go there anymore, its too hard for her.

Sul Ross by the Academic Building is cool.

Aggie tailgating at Spence Park and by Reed is getting better, fun to walk around before the game.

The Corps steps off from the Quad 1.5 hours from Kyle. They march from Lubbock St to Coke St onto Joe Routt Blvd. Out favorite spot to watch is in the middle of Joe Routt Blvd between the MSC and Koldus.

Speaking of MSC, just reopened. Take a look around. Please stay off the grass and remove your hat while inside.

Edit: For food, Sodolak's in Snook, about 15 miles from Kyle Field. From the hill in Snook you can see Kyle Field. Sodolak's is known for its chicken fried bacon and 'extra small sirloin' that laps over the plate. We always stop there on our way into College Station.

If my buddies and I go to this, do we just walk in and sit in the stands? I feel like this would be pretty awkward. Any opposing fans go to this? I want to call the Hogs during this.

If I was an opposing fan I wouldn't go, but it's up to you. I'd rather spend it on bar time if you're only going to be there 2 nights and not coming back. It's basically a pep rally for A&M so I don't think it would be enjoyable for an Arkansas fan.

Don't go to midnight yell.

Just don't.

Bonfire Memorial is probably the biggest "must see" I think for opposing fans. It's definitely a downer but it's pretty moving. Seeing all the A&M Medal of Honor winners in the Student Center is pretty awesome also if you're a military/history buff

I think we'll skip that then. I was in the Hog band the last couple years so have been up close to the fans and Aggie band quite a few times and have heard the yells. Plus we'll probably see and hear them a lot during the game.

I tend to agree. Older folks might want to go check out yell but younger opposing fans are wasting valuable bar time.

You'll hear the yells throughout the game no matter what.

I'd still go to Midnight Yell for the experience but not be a dick. *shrug*

If A&M wins, the fish (Corps freshmen) will tackle the yell leaders and carry them to fish pond by Sbisa (oh, another place to check out, its kinda fricking huge). You'd have to leave the game early to beat them to fish pond, but its pretty cool too.

Disagree with those saying not to go to Yell. I go to Yell all the time and there are people of all ages, families, etc. There are always a lot of opposing team fans. There were quite a few Gators of all ages at the first yell.

If you go, just don't be an arse and people won't be an arse to you. Most Aggies love opposing team fans coming to check out what we do. Just like we like seeing what your traditions are. Personally, I love the whole Pig Sooie thing. One of my favorite college traditions.

One thing not mentioned yet is the George HW Bush Library. It's pretty cool, not sure if you have been to the Clinton Library (I haven't) but I would imagine it has a lot of similarities.

I'd skip the Yell after the game and go down on the field. If you bring a football you can throw it around or even kick a field goal, it's pretty fun. Agree that MIdnight Yell is cool if you are in the right mindset of just going to watch a unique event. It's not a good place to "Call the Hogs".

Restaurant/bar recommends are all good. Might throw in Double Daves Pizza for some Pepperoni Rolls as a winner.

How does a person not know this? Heck, University of Arkansas has a current president (Ricardo Martinelli of Panama).

Ok, sounds like the Midnight Yell is something cool to check out. I was sorta kidding about the Hog call during your pep rally. I don't want to provoke some guy to kiss me or something.

Those yankee schools must not teach about successful Southerners. I bet they like to think we all wander around our backwoods shacks with moonshine all day, accomplishing nothing

I live in College Station, but work in Caldwell... If you don't mind the 30 minutes drive, or are coming through Austin or San Antonio, I would recommend it. It just opened up a couple months ago, and it is in the town square, and it replaced this old deli a couple months ago, and it is basically a guy and his son that won a ton of BBQ competitions around the state that opened their own shop. I can't remember what it is called but it is right across the street from the fire department. Phenomenal. Best BBQ I've had within an hour of College Station.

Things to see on campus.

- Check out Bonfire Memorial because it is quick.

- Before the game when you need to pee, walk around in the MSC. It is all new and super nice.

- Food wise I was always more impartial to Fitzwilly's than Dixie Chicken/Chicken Oil.

- Corner Bar is very over priced and always very busy, but for your run of the mill outdoor patio place, it is your best option.

- For being on NG, if you are going with females, you might as well check out Duke's since it is the only dance floor on NG. It's meh. You probably won't stay long. There is going to be a really jacked Persian dude that will tend one of the downstairs bars. He's got a mole on his nostril. If you ask him for a drink that is a racial epithet for a Persian, more commonly a racist name for a black guy with the material dunes are made of in front of it. He will get excited and act like he knows you. It is his drink he invented and will give it to you for super cheap.

- If you are feeling fratty, check out the Ranch or Logan's(its a chain, I know there is one in Norman and Austin, exact same).

- If you want to enjoy a nice beer(I'm a fan of binge drinking cheap light beer, but they are still fun place) go to O'Bannons or Rebel Draft House.

- The rest of the bars I haven't mentioned are all fun. While a few bars seem to have higher population of frat guys, and the more dance club type places have a bit more UFC wannabees, every place on NG is fun, just explore a bit. You won't go very far before you find what suites you.

- BUT. What I do first is go to the Tipsy Turtle and order some shots of sweet tequila, and make sure they aren't lazy about it. What do I mean lazy? What is sweet tequila? Sweet tequila is normal tequila, but instead of the gross combination of salt on the rim, and a lime, they substitute it for the brilliantly balanced duo of cinnamon sugar and a luscious orange. Make sure they mix the cinnamon and sugar well. Sometimes they just put pure sugar on the rim, and then cinnamon on the orange, or whatever. Which is fine, and still very good, but the best bartenders won't be lazy and do it the right way. Paddock Lane next door and Mad Hatter's will also make this. I don't think any other bar carries the cinnamon.

- If you drunk on NG at night, plan to go to Antonio's Pizza. Pick out one slice that looks good, and then ask for something crazy. The best time to experiment with cool pizza toppings is when you're drunk. Trust me. The one standard, one crazy slice, always works, and the two slices combined are cheaper than two slices of cheese pizza on 6th street. Trust me.

And unfortunately I won't be at this game. Rig up tomorrow, and run night shift for a 20 stage frac beginning Thursday. If I can power through without sleep when I get back to the hotel Friday night/Saturday morning, hopefully I can find a close bar that places the game. I do know one thing, I will be wearing black, for the piggie's season's funeral.

I'm hoping that either Shipwreck has changed their menu, the managment, their cook, and/or any of the above since I've been there in 2010. That place was horrible. The worst example of seafood I've had ever. I wouldn't recommend that place at all.

The best BBQ will be at the tailgate. Even though I'm expecting more drank and less grub since it's an 1100 game. If I see you there

I had heard of Rudy's, but if it's a chain I think I'll pass.

It's not Smitty's or City Market, but Rudy's is actually incredibly well done for a chain, and they are based out of Texas. Whole different animal than something like Sonny's or Smokey Bones. If one is convenient, you'd be nuts not to stop by for at least some spicy chop breakfast tacos.

Goddamn I miss spicy chop breakfast tacos - add eggs potato, some bbq, and salsa verde...

This thread just pissed me off and made me home sick. Thanks.
