I as an FSU fan growing up (uncle was roommates with Bobby Bowden in college). But went to school at LSU. Wasn't really a fan until during the 2000 basketball season. After that and the up and down 2000 football season, I was sold.

It may be hard to believe if your alma mater is a school like TCU but in most cases people are proud of their Alma mater and become passionate in their support. I have a few friends that are still huge/bigger Bama fans than Auburn even though they go to AU. They still are rabid AU fans in non iron bowl games and huge fans

My cousin grew up in the Knoxville area, went to Tennessee and is a die hard Bama fan. He wears really tall white tube socks. Very strange dude.

ETA: I grew up going to Tennessee games but never was a fan.
