I think Les is a solid 2. Saban should be ranked ahead.

5. Gene Chizik

We will see how good he is without Malzahn this year. And isn't it Kevin Sumlin?

Chizik is too high. But it's tough to put people ahead of him. The middle there is a sea of crap. Maybe Richt.

Saban should be ahead of Miles and Pinkel's a better coach than Franklin and Muschamp but the rest of your list looks about right. Saban, Miles, Petrino, and Spurrier are clearly the top four coaches in the SEC at the moment. There's no question about that.

Tier 5

Tier 4
Dooley
Sumlin
Muschamp
Tier 3
Chizik
Mullen
Franklin
Pinkel
Richt
Tier 2
Miles
Spurrier

Tier 1
Saban

I did mine worst to best since I like to break the rules.

And kind of like Pearl's opinion of basketball schools, tier 2 is a lot closer to tier 6 than tier 1

Petrino at LSU would do better than Miles. Petrino is at the top with Saban. If we are strictly speaking of coaching ability. Look what Petrino does with a bunch of 3 stars. He coaches them up is what he does.

IMO it's amazing Chiz was able to win 8 games in 09' and 11' with the crew they had. Take into consideration the horrible defenses the Chris Todd's and White Cams. AU could have easily been 5 or 6 win teams both last year and in 09. Even with Cam there were a lot of comeback wins and close games that many coaches could have blown.

I don't really feel like making another list, but I feel comfortable saying Saban is at the top while Dooley is near the bottom, if not dead last.

Needless to say, the Third Saturday in October has been painful for a while and it will probably continue to be that way for at last 2-3 more years.
