With UT's recruiting challenges and their current situation it seems daunting for them to get back to winning the SECCG anytime soon.

East sucks so bad UT can make it to Atlanta as early as this fall. yes I said it, this fall.

The East won't stay down forever. Georgia and South Carolina will both be good next year, and Florida won't be down for long either. Also factor in Vandy. They won't win the East but they will be competitive.

Do I think Tennessee will win? No. Do I think Tennessee would be in position to compete for it if Dooley was competent? Absolutely.

ohiovol is right. most in the thread are really overstating things.

UT has the two best wideouts in the league, arguably the most talented QB in the league, five returning O-linemen, and ten returning starters on defense, most of whom were highly regarded recruits.

An elite coach could absolutely win the east with this team. Not saying Dooley is that guy.

PS: And most of those players I alluded to above are coming back AGAIN the next year, so if it doesn't happen in '12 it could in '13.

UT has some good pieces (only the Lord knows how) but is a long way away from competing. I'm actually rooting for you guys to get back and move USC back to their normal level. It's more fun that way.

If by the bold you mean at least 3-4 years away from competing with Alabama and LSU, I would probably agree. If by that you mean UT is a long way off from competing for the East, I strongly disagree. The best coach in the division is nearing 70. The second best coach spends every other year on the hot seat. The third best coach is at Vanderbilt.

I see what you are saying. However, if you think Boom is done at UF then I will bet against your notion. I might lose but I feel pretty good about it. He's recruiting well and has the defense on the right track. He just needs someone to operate the offense efficiently and keep improving with managing the "process".

From what I can tell, he has his ducks more organized than Dooley now that Weis is gone.

The team is so excited about Weis leaving and so are recruits. I'll tell more later.

ETA: I understand that it is going to take a national championship for anyone to say Boom is a good coach even though that's ridiculous.

That wouldn't surprise me. I just don't see Muschamp as the kind of coach who can get Florida back to the level of LSU and Bama. I strongly believe that if Tennessee can get the right coach after the 2012 season (and that's a huge 'if' with the way things have been run at Tennessee), the new guy will have a chance to completely take over the East, depending on the coaching situations of the other schools.

I'm not peeing on UT fans any longer. I have been reformed until you guys start winning again and start acting like Bama fans again. Until then, I'm rooting for you guys against UK.

I'm all for things returning to the way they were in the 90's... with Tennessee winning a few more against Florida.

They are the one major program that can't dig themselves out of a hole, banking on in-state talent to stay home. Alabama's 2008 class was predominantly in-state guys. They turned things around. UT can't lean on anything like that.

Which is why Phil Fulmer is the most underrated coach in SEC history.

That's why is so hard to follow a national championship winning coach. Expectations are very high.

Fulmer inherited a shite ton of talent and an elite staff. He did not have to dig himself out of any kind of hole.

That's going too far. Phil Fulmer and the staff did an exceptional job of recruiting up until Tennessee won the national championship. Far better than most people realize. Tennessee had as much talent as anyone in the country around that time period. However, after losing Rodney Garner to Georgia and getting complacent with the success he already had, things completely turned around. He began pulling in far more busts and proved to be a rather poor evaluator of talent. Fulmer may have taken Tennessee to new heights, but he then ran an elite program straight off a cliff. There's really no way around that.

There's no doubt there.

Fulmer deserves credit for some things, but he was fired years too late.

Within the last 6 months, Tennessee has gotten Alabama executive director of athletics (Mal Moore's 2nd in command), Dave Hart; associate athletic director for compliance, Mike Ward; associate athletic director for external operations, Jon Gilbert; and now LB Coach Sal Sunseri.

That's not counting hiring Dooley, a past assistant coach for Saban. When he was hired, all they talked about was that he was a younger version of Nick Saban.

I don't count Lance Thompson. That was about 3 or 4 years ago and Thompson had gotten in trouble at UA and had to leave.

It sure does look like UT is trying to copy Alabama.

It is fricking pathetic. If we hire Kirby, I will be done with Tennessee football until Hart's gone.
