Auburn fans were mad that they had been losing to LSU a lot so they copied and pasted some stupid internet joke about smelling like corndogs that was about Oklahoma State fans and replaced the word Oklahoma with Louisiana. It was awesome.

Bunch of LSU fans stole some corndogs from an orphanage back in '93.
The nickname stuck with them.

I thought it was started by Auburn fans who said Tiger Stadium smelled like corndogs. Having been in TS myself, I know this not to be true. The place smells like liquor and in some spots like vomit. But corndogs?

There are plenty of anecdotal stories about how it started, most involve Nebraska and/or Auburn.
It stuck because it's funny how much it bothers some LSU fans.
ETA: The LSU fans thinking it's not funny is why it's funny. It bothers them so much

The Hot pockets (auburn) got pissed bc we kept calling them hot pockets. They were notorious for Shitting in foldout couches and closing it as if it never happened. They didn't know why we were calling them hot pockets and said "oh yeah!?! You're a fricking corndog!!!"
The rest is history.

Once upon a time, in the year 1958, the lsu tigers were on a great run to success. But danger approached them, because as they were getting ready for the team meal the night before the big game against Clemson, it had been discovered that the Clemson team had wrecked their place of dining in New Orleans. After discovering the horrible tragedy, coaches and players look quick to find their team a good meal the night before the game, but had trouble. Until they stumbled upon one man, a hot dog vender. He fed as many as he could, but soon ran out of buns. Then, with the blink of a eye, he realized he had plenty of cornmeal batter and a deep fryer. Without hesitation, he whipped up as many corndogs as he could until the team was full. Some believe they even saw Billy Cannon eating one of those corndogs on the sideline before the drive that led to the only touchdown.
But it came to be known that they were the magical corndogs, which is why we are called the corndogs.

Please don't call me a corndog. It hurts my feelings.

I didn't get it either until I saw the corndog scene in the "two girls one cup" video. DO NOT look that video up. It's disgusting.

I'm not a tiger hater - its a nickname that was stuck from some aub years ago - stupid or not it now belongs to LSU. LSU doesnt get to decide if its legit or not - the other fanbases do. Just like Gumps, Updykes, Boogers, Barners, Ridge-Runners, Jorts, Swamper, etc. was decided by opposing fanbases for those schools. So who wins in Jan Gumps or Corndogs?
