i'm pretty sure it's not uga because "GA" is the state abbreviation.

it's got to be "university of georgia at athens"

but why

why not UG

why you trying to be different uga?

It's more common when "University" is before the state name.

Sometimes you will see UoG but I think U Ga just evolved to UGA a couple hundred years ago and stuck.

Old state abbreviation for Georgia was Ga. so this makes the most sense except that the new abbreviations (GA) weren't implemented until 1963.

what i was thinking but everyone else says it's because of the state abbreviation

but still, why www.uga.edu

as opposed to www.ua.edu for bama

still wondering why it's not just ug

Even though it's still a possibility, I haven't seen any posts with, "You can't spell Les miLes without two L's" lately.

sure it's in tuscaloosa but we don't call ourselves UAT

same for tenn, although i think it's more often called UTk just so it isn't confused with tx

Can't believe the UGA fans don't know this. They must be sidewalk fans.

It stands for University of Georgia Athletics.

I am pretty sure it is at its heart a linguistics matter. In the English language it is more simply more natural to have "ga" at the end than stop on a G or a V, ( like UVA). Just a thought.
