don't state universities normally leave off the location?

is it because of the mascot names?

is it so people don't say "you can't spell thug without UG"

what gives.

TIA

I always thought the "GA" was just there because it's the official abbreviation for "Georgia"

I had always assumed it had something to do with the state abbreviation of Georgia, GA. And I'm pretty sure Uga the mascot was subsequently named as a result of it being called UGA. Could be wrong.

He assumed the A meant Athens, I'm guessing.

His point is, why not just UG? Florida doesn't use UFL, Bama doesn't use UAL, Texas isn't UTx. To each his own, if Georgia wants to be UGA, so be it. I'm just clarifying the point OP was making

But didn't the two letter abbreviations start in 1963? What was Georgia's postal abbreviation before that?

It is sort of a good question... no other school uses both letters of the states abbreviation do they?

Oh it seems you're right. In that case, my post isn't what he was trying to say

I think this is more correct because they didn't start using GA for the state abbreviation until 1963, but I'm pretty sure they have been calling it UGA for longer than that.

Well I mean technically SC does, but that doesn't really count.
