"I mean, we were second in recruiting last year," Saban told the audience. "A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team -- made a deal for name, image, likeness. We didn't buy one player, all right? But I don't know if we're gonna be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it. It's tough."
Was this bullshite when Saban said it?
That was before Alabama formed it's collective and in fact was probably the reason it was formed.
Was it bullshite when he said it? I want a running count of the Alabama fans who think Brian Kelly is full of shite for saying what he said and Nick Saban wasn't.

Like I said yesterday when this CBK's comments hit the boards, some things are better left unsaid.
Why give competitors on the recruiting trail ammo to use against you based on comments that can be taken out of context? BK could've easily said, things aren't quite up to LSU's standard, but the LSU staff is working hard on evaluations and the team will be ready in the fall.

LSU was at #7 in the 2023 Team Talent Composite, Miami was at #12, Ole Miss was at #23.
Impossible to make up that much of a difference in one offseason.
Overall 247 Composite Recruiting Rankings for 2024 (transfers and recruits):
6. Miami
9. LSU
17. Ole Miss
On field success is a combination of talent, experience and coaching.
Michigan wasn't incredibly talented last year (#14 in the talent composite, 1 spot ahead of Florida). But their talent was VERY experienced (60 of their players were juniors or seniors). They basically used the covid year exemption to have one of the oldest rosters in CFB history.
They combined experience with a pretty good (if annoying) head coach to win a national title.
I tend to think the guy you were responding to was trying to claim Miami and Ole Miss's rosters were more talented in the combination of talent with experience was higher than LSU. When you recruit more through the portal than through high school recruiting, you can consistently put forward a roster that might not have more talent in the sense of where players could develop to by the end of their career, but might have more talent in terms of what the players can do the following season (because they're older).
I'm still not sure even that is true, but it's closer to being true than just looking at stars.

Except he's literally spoke in favor of paying players before. He's even said he was in favor of exploring profit sharing.
What he said in the past doesn't change the virtue signaling he's doing right now. Or the fact he's simply lying right now about LSU not buying players.
I agree, he's not consistent. What he said before about paying players is what he's doing. What he is saying now about paying players is a lie.

That's fair.

A comment Kelly made to an LSU staff reporter isn't going to impact recruiting one way or the other, anymore than it did for Nick Saban when he said what he said. LSU offers competitive NIL packages to recruits just like every other school. They know what they've been offered regardless of what Brian Kelly, Nick Saban, Kirby Smart or any other HC says publicly. It's a non-issue to everyone other than a small group of message board trolls.

I don't think it's a negative.
He's essentially saying players need to want to come to LSU because they're going to be developed and to win championships, not because they want a lot of NIL money.
Kirby and Saban have said similar things, they just didn't go as far as Kelly.
I don’t disagree with what Kelly is saying, at all, but the issue is that a lot of kids don’t think about it this way. So, they may be put off by this comments, even though everything he is saying is valid.
I don’t blame Kelly for saying any of this, just have to consider the minds of current day kids.

I applaud Coach Kelly for taking this stance. I think all of the other coaches not named Kalen Deboer should do the same.

Coach Kelly is just backing up what Terry Saban said about recruiting.
"All they're interested in is the money".
"All they're interested in is the money".

He never said LSU doesn't pay players.
People clipped the one sentence where he said LSU isn't in the business of buying players and took completely it out of context.
Which is fine if you're just looking to troll.

Alabama introduced an NIL collective over a month before Saban made those comments.
Ok, so still after the recruiting class was over.

Nothing he said was bullshite. Alabama did not have a collective for that recruiting class, so he wasn't buying players with it. At the time, I think A&M was the only one with a collective.
He didn't like the shite so he retired, and I don't blame him. It's the entire reason he left the NFL, and now college football has turned into that.
If BK said - frick this shite, I'm not dealing with it anymore, I wouldn't blame him either. The entire thing sucks arse, but don't pretend like you aren't playing ball after you strike out.

You think Saban literally meant Alabama wasn't paying players prior to NIL?

If you think Saban has ever paid a player then you are dumber than I thought.
shite may happen in terms of players getting paid, but good coaches don't get involved in that shite. It completely undermines their authority as the player now has the ability to end a coaches career at any point just by speaking up. So whatever happens, it's done by boosters and other types.
The entire reason he retired is because he doesn't want any part of that shite.

I seriously doubt a school/coach has ever personally paid a player (outside of Will Wade).
The schools/coaches aren't the ones paying the players now though, it's still the boosters.
