Everything is moving that way. It’s the only way the portal and NIL are going to get under control

We should have left them disbanded and without a football program.

And everyone wonders why UAB is disliked so much.

The only thing they can do is try to get the actual schools to pay the players which isn't a great solution imo. You pay football players then you have to pay all athletes and for most schools that means shutting down most if not all athletic programs.
I think the solution is 2 year contracts. Have clauses that make low academics or other behavior issues void the contract. Maybe even have coaches leaving void the contract. They don't even need to have money involved. All the contract does is guarantee the athlete 2 years on the team as long as they are in good standing and guarantee the school the athletes services for 2 years without their threat of leaving. At the 2 year mark they can sign to their current school for 2 more years or they can enter the portal and find a new school. The NFL draft (or whatever pro sport draft) would also be a way to void the contract. If they got redshirted, they can enter the transfer portal again after their 4th year and sign a 1 year contract somewhere or stay at their current school. This would mean that the retention efforts only have to be allocated to a certain portion of the roster and not the whole roster every year. NIL would still be its own thing that gets negotiated per athlete.

Is this "dislike" an Alabama thing only? SEC thing?
I always heard that the Bear's son screwed them over and that they were the victims on the disbanded football thing.
Other than that. Most people know they used to be really good at basketball.... and they have a highly respected medical school.
So you Bama people need to fill some of us in about UAB hate.

Alabama is the University of Alabama, UAB is the University of Alabama at Birmingham. And you have UAH as well.
But then it's all controlled by the University of Alabama system, even though each is autonomous.
I don't know much beyond that. Some kind of bickering and fighting or something. Not wanting to have 3 different programs among them, or using resources to it. Something like that.
Auburn fans are the ones who pump UAB just because they hate Alabama.

That's the view put out by the media but it was really very simple ( The Birmingham News). UAB football does not make enough money to support itself. The requirements for 15K avg per game is barely met if it is met at all. They had to get the city of Birmingham to build them a stadium that I wouldn't even call theirs. If you are going to compete in the SEC you can't be subsidizing other programs. Jax State, Troy, South Alabama all seem to do fine. All of those just mentioned average around 25-27K a game in small, out of the way towns. Why can't UAB do it a large metro area? so their fall back is to always blame Tuscaloosa for their horrible leadership and their alums who don't give one hoot about UAB football. UAB basketball has a nice fanbase and its a really good program that the University gets behind. Football is just not a thing there and honestly they can't afford it but, as much as I don't like it, Tuscaloosa will continue to prop them up.

A lot of it originated with Gene Bartow. He wrote to David Berst, NCAA assistant executive director for enforcement requesting Alabama Basketball be investigated. His accusations also dragged Coach Bryant (who had been deceased for several years) into it. The LA Times published the letter, and it didn't go over very well, especially with PBJ.

Gonna be interesting to watch the moral dilemma going on in RTW states (SEC, ACC) when they realize what a competitive disadvantage RTW statutes provide when competing with states without such statutes (most of the Big10).

No. It goes back to the Bear and Gene Bartow. Bartow accused Bear and Alabama of cheating. Gene later apologized:
quote:
Bartow also urged Berst to investigate the Alabama basketball program and noted that several football coaches whose programs had drawn NCAA sanctions--including Jackie Sherrill, Danny Ford and Charley Pell--were “trained” by Bryant. In a statement issued Wednesday by UAB, Bartow said: “I had great respect for Coach Bryant as the greatest football coach who ever lived and sincerely apologize to family, friends, former players and fans who were offended.
“I would also apologize to the coaches who worked under Coach Bryant who were mentioned. . . . They are all fine coaches, and I’m not sure why I put that in my letter. “This letter was written out of deep frustration about our apparent inability to recruit the same high-caliber players Alabama was getting under their former staff. I would like to emphasize that I have the greatest respect for the current athletic staff . . . at Alabama. “I was extremely upset at the NCAA enforcement staff at the time, especially with what I saw as their failure to enforce NCAA rules. . . . “
That rift has lasted until this day. UAB and Alabama will not play each other in football or basketball.
Some other things that added fuel to the fire is when Jimbo Fisher was LSU's OC and the UAB job was open. The University of Alabama system didn't want to pay him what he wanted for that job. UAB was (and always has been) losing money with it's football program and the view was that paying $600k a year to Fisher was not a good investment. And a lot of that built up to the point where the program was shuttered due to it continuing to lose money.
UAB fans were pissed and blamed Alabama. The auburn fans saw this as an opportunity to hurt Alabama, so they because very vocal and pro-UAB.
And it's the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Not the UAB School of Medicine. But that's another fight for another day...

It was fun when they came back stronger than ever and started reeling off conference titles.
Shame Bill Clark never got the shot to move up the ladder he deserved. The man could coach.
