I can tell you the 2010 Auburn team chapped Gump asses like nothing else we will ever see again.

Chizik
Auburn was a 1 man team.
LSU had a shitload of weapons and Joe fricking Brady
Burrow (Top 10 NFL QB when healthy)
Jefferson & Chase (2 Top 10 NFL WR's)
and plenty of others

O had a much better team and set records. AU had Cam.

This is essentially wet dog shite vs dry dog shite but I'll give the slight edge to O just because he had his star QB for two years and at least won in more than one season. Gene was the actual true definition of one hit wonder.
Both are warmed over blue waffles as HC's though.

The Gumps were definitely butthurt Burrow & Co. stole their thunder, if you will, but keep in mind the 2019 season started following Clemson putting an all-time arse whooping on Bama in Santa Clara. Let's just say they didn't have as much starch in their britches as usual. Plus, they had won five of the last ten national championships at that time, so even those with the most Bama in 'em knew a letdown was coming.

It is true O had much more success than Chizik. 2018 LSU finished in the top ten and ended UCF's 25-game win streak in the Fiesta Bowl. Meanwhile, 2009 Auburn went to overtime with Northwestern in the Outback Bowl.
To answer OP, I don't believe O is a one-hit wonder.
Furthermore, the squads cannot be accurately compared. The 2019 Bayou Bengals was better than the 2010 Plainsmen. I don't think even the most diehard Barner would claim otherwise.

IMHO Gene Chizik's deserves recognition for his ability to keep that team focused while the whole country was blasting Newton and the NCAA was up their arse.

Unpopular opinion, O would've been at least above average if he'd have just focused on recruiting and overseeing the coaching staff.
After 2019, he lost focus on football yet also wanted to prove to everyone that he was a good coach and started meddling too much.

A couple of the other guys on the defensive side of the ball had productive NFL careers. Neiko Thorpe was arguably the best gunner in the NFL for a few years and Josh Bynes will never have to buy a drink in any bar in Baltimore so long as he lives.
That being said statistically I think it was the worst defense to win BCSNCG at the time. Offensively we had a good line but the receiving corps was nothing to write home about. Backs were good with McCaleb and Dyer (credit to Gus’ scheme for making McCaleb a dangerous weapon on those jet motions).
Take Cam away that was an 8-5 team though.

Don't know, but I think it's a safe bet that Chizik is the better one as an analyst.
On the one hand you can say it's O because 2010 Auburn was lucky to beat Alabama. 2019 LSU was a better team overall.
On the other hand, you can kind of say Chizik did it with less talent as the team was mostly Cam and Farley.
So in the end, I'm going to have to say its Les Miles.

This was the problem though, he wasn't good at either of those things.
Coaches are going to leave either because they're fired or they get hired away. Ed did a horrible job of vetting and replacing his coordinators once they would leave.
He also stargazed a lot. It left our roster deep in some spots and deficient in others from a numbers standpoint even though we had highly regarded classes.
There really wasn't any aspect in which he succeeded after 2019.

Chizik. Coach O had basically a half-step down from an NFL offense.

100%. I don't think just any coach could've done that. It's a shame he totally lost control after that and wasn't able to get that ball rolling.

I’d rather have a drink with O.

Cam had a veteran OL and a nasty dude on D in Fairley. Fairley would be suspended every game, if he played this way in 2024. We loved it, but I don't blame others for hating him.

Thought they were the same guy?
