Coach of the 1974 team that received the most bullshite probation in SEC history.
Football player received a discount on clothes from a Starkville business that was offered to every MSU student.
Because it was a men’s clothing store, the NcAA deemed that it technically wasn’t offered to every MSU student so it was impermissible.

That’s ridiculous.
Condolences to the family…

The NCAA routinely made Ole Miss and State the example for decades. Even though it benefited us in getting Jackie Sherrill out of Starkville, it’s still bullshite the punishments they received

We got penalized because a trucking company paid around 200 bucks extra to some players that was revealed during a nasty divorce and though we self sanctioned the ncaa drug their feet for 4 years before addressing it which killed recruitment leading to 2 losing seasons.
Us “lesser “ programs get screwed every time. That’s one reason our program doesn’t take chances on players who are great but have underlying issues, imo.

Coach Tyler was a great football coach who got completely fricked by the NCAA.
He was also a great High School back in the 1960’s, especially at Meridian High where he was 20-0-1 with the two State Championships in 1966 & 1967. Coached Robert (Give em hell, Robert Bell) at MHS. He and Frank Dowsing were later the first black football players at State.
Also coached George Ranager & David Bailey at MHS. Both went on tremendous careers at WR at Bama under the Bear. Ranager was later a long time SEC football official who was well respected in the league for decades.
One last story. The QB at Meridian High in 1966 was Bob White. He was signed by Johnny Vaught at Ole Miss to be the QB of the future in Oxford. However he suffered a career ending knee injury in an all star game the following summer. That injury allowed a little known QB from Drew, Ms to later become the starter at Ole Miss. The name of the QB was Archie Manning.
RIP Coach Tyler. A fine man indeed and a heck of a good football coach.

One of the level 1 violations we got punished for during the Freeze era was because of a player sleeping on his position coach's couch for two nights after getting kicked out of his GF's apartment. We self-reported it to the NCAA and then had the player pay an amount of money agreed upon by the NCAA to the coach as compensation. The NCAA still included that in the investigation.
It's the same level of violation as if the coach would have bought the player a house.
