I would imagine Frank Broyles and many in the administration didn't like the idea that football was taking a backseat to basketball.
It was Broyles who invested in basketball and the other sports to make them the best. Why wouldn’t he like the basketball program doing well?
But football was what paid for the other sports so there was a priority put on it. If Richardson didn’t like it he should have gone elsewhere and see if he could get paid more. I doubt it.

Does NIL really matter? Jimbo had all that NIL and couldn't cut it in the SEC. Cal had top recruiting classes nearly every year at UK the last 8 years and failed to make a single Final 4. Coaching is still important, and Cal seems to have slipped quite a bit in that department. We shall see whether he can find his old mojo again in Fayetteville.

Because Broyles and Richardson didn't like each other. And in his own words said that Nutt was getting more support than he did with more compensation and bonuses but little achievement.
Football does pay for other sports but that shouldn't be an excuse that a 7-5 football coach should be paid more money than a national champion basketball coach. That is called not showing any appreciation and not taking care of your employee.
He said he could have left for other jobs and got paid more but turned them down.

He should have. No one wanted him by the end of his career. He screwed his self and has no one else to blame, but he did blame everyone but himself. Sounds like an ego problem.
Even though it was university policy at the time it wasn’t changed because everyone of the racists were against him.
This is from Richardson’s racial discrimination trial:
Broyles said there were other offensive comments from Richardson, including one in which Richardson called Razorback fans “turds and assholes.” There was also a reference to “redneck SOBs,” Broyles said. (Broyles said he coached football for 17 years, never used a word of profanity and still doesn’t.) These and other statements by Richardson hurt recruiting, the fan base and team morale, Broyles said.
Richardson wasn’t a victim, he made himself one in his head. Do you think he’s going to write a book derogatory to himself?
