A rumor I heard is that Durkin had not been fired by Texas A&M, so there were issues with his buyout. Whether A&M wanted Auburn to pay a buyout, or if Durkin wanted his guaranteed money from A&M is not clear to me. The delay is likely due to lawyers hashing all that out.

From what I've read I think an agreement was reached 2 weeks ago and the delay was on the business end between Durkin and each AD about how to deal with his 3.5 mil salary. A&M recently lost their AD so there's some transition on that end that probably drew it out longer than normal
