Oh well I’m sure they’ll create rules to reign in NIL and the Portal AFTER our roster and program gets decimated.
I have no doubt this will be the case

What’s weird is at any point in the future here we’ll be a top brand, with top facilities, a top HC/OC combo, and no roster

At some point Alabama will be MUCH greener grass than where some players(especially ones that have just transferred) are standing. Which, is such an odd thought to me. There will be an exact moment where Alabama goes from “frick this place” to very attractive to players.

I would probably agree.

It's just funny to me that everyone is looking at this like a typical bidding war for a recruit. It's completely different. You aren't trying to budget your NIL money between 20-25 players in a recruiting class (some of which will not be elite, but rather depth players). We are trying to budget our NIL money across an 80-85 man team. Even the 2-deep is 44 players... all probably getting higher offers from other schools that we just can't compete with. We are in an awful position right now because we are fighting every program in college football, across 80-85 players (44 if we are being conservative)

So Downs is officially gone?

I mean, this is kinda ridiculous at this point that Alabama (this is still Alabama) is losing big-time recruits.

To not keep someone of Down’s talent is an early strike against the coaching staff. No other way to look at it.

It's not a trade. It's about bringing in a talented player. They don't even play the same position. Muhammad is not a fringe roster player at all. Just because you may not know who he is doesn't mean he isn't a good player.

I was talking about NFL potential. But I do agree, you can't see it as a trade. It is still a net negative in overall talent on the roster. Muhammad is a good player but it isn't cinched up that he ends up in Tuscaloosa. I'd welcome him gladly though...he may be able to help with establishing DeBoer's culture here.

That's just retarded. 8-4 remains the worst case scenario. Much worse than that and you're talking losses to teams like South Carolina.

It is year 1 with new schemes and coaches plus a roster that is less talented than it could have been if Saban had the gas in him to give it one more go. Alabama is going to lose some games they shouldn't due to miscommunications and still some others due to gaps in the roster caused by unwanted transfer attrition. As it stands now, Alabama is playing a new defense that wants to be aggressive but both outside corners are new starters and both safeties too. The offense is without their two best returning pass catchers by yards and touchdowns.

8-4 is the realistic expectation. Remember, Urban FREAKIN Meyer got his arse WHIPPED by Mike Shula in 2005. He had never seen that team speed on defense in the MAC or MWC. DeBoer is going to get the same sort of baptism by fire too.

No he’s not gone officially. And I’m not sure it’s a strike per se. Downs is a really really good player. It’s why we wanted him and it’s why others do now

You're going to pay more than a million for a safety? Hell you had a DB from UAB and ULL playing beside him.

I really think what is happening to us is going to be the impetus to fix the NIL / Portal stuff. If Michigan and LSU open up as well, we won't be the only victims either. Too bad Kirby isn't going NFL, that would really level out the playing field here.

Downs leaving sucks, hopefully he leaves the portal and comes back

That being said, I’ll be neutral if the worst case scenario for us is we get to Friday, when most add/drops are done and gone, only losing Bond/Niblack/Downs while gaining Germie Bernard, the Center, and maybe Muhammad.

Downs is a great player, but we’re lucky that we have Tony Mitchell behind him. We might only get 85% of the production but I’m fine with it.

Anyone jumping on DeBoer right now, you’re blaming a coach with no relationships. For what we could have lost, this is absolutely a drop in the bucket and he’s handled things smoothly.

No, he can pull his name out of the portal. He has placed it in the portal though so he is "officially looking".

This is really going to stick it some kids. When all the dust settles and they don’t have a home.

Alabama star safety Caleb Downs plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to multiple reports.

One of the outlets reporting Downs’ decision is Deuce Recruiting, operated by Downs’ father Gary, a former NFL running back and longtime college assistant coach.

It’s a huge blow - you really can’t look at this any other way. Coming from his father - no point in entering the portal if you aren’t leaving. They have a plan.

He left the morning after the secondary coach was hired . He obviously planned on leaving anyway. There was no opportunity to convince him otherwise. Personally I can’t blame the coaches for that. We will struggle next year but I think this staff will win long term. JMO

There is a single player from our team entering the portal to “look.” They entered knowing their next move already. The moment Saban announced his retirement every big time coach called our roster and made offers. Those kids are just accepting those offers. I’ll gladly eat crow but not a single kid in the portal is returning. They’ve already made their bed

Best thing to do at this point is tune out till spring A day and see who’s around then. Won’t be like the last few years but nothing we can do about it. Plan for a down year next year and if we come out gunning be happy. Coach probably get things figured out in a year or two no reason to worry until then.

We haven't seen a single person yet who has entered the portal, and then come back. I believe that's wishful thinking. I think if Downs decided to enter the portal, then we can safely assume he's gone.

The greatest myth about the portal is that players enter it to see what's out there rather than as a formality after they have been extensively tampered with by other programs. Once they have gone into the portal, the destination is all but decided on.

I wasn't saying Downs is coming back. I'm just stating that he isn't "officially gone" per the post I was responding to. He can withdraw his name.
