I will give this advice to younger parents on here for planning. Next fall will be my 3rd child I send off to college.

First I’m not a huge fan of the 529 plan. If you are go for it.

GPA is huge. Test scores are huge. Have them start practicing and preparing for the ACT even in the 9th grade by doing online practice test.

If you’re high school overs dual enrollment with a community college do it. It’s cheap and fairly easy to knock out a couple first year courses. Like 101 and 102 English and 101 and 102 history.

Start looking into scholarships in your students junior year.

Have your student do many things outside of the school to build their resume. Volunteer work, working with the local city government be a well rounded person essentially.

Save 24-25k to give to your student for expenses over the course of their 4 years. They can give themselves a $500/month allowance so you know they don’t starve to death like I did in school lol.

AP classes in high school are a good option as well but if you don’t pass the test you don’t get the college credit.
