The interactive nature of the article was pretty cool.

Reading this and pairing it with the recent over-commercialization of downtown has put a sour taste in my mouth for Auburn unfortunately.

Keeping the lights on in all those new buildings is costly. In 2016, the school spent nearly $30 million on utilities, more than double what it did in 2002.

How about now?

If I was picking schools tomorrow, I'd probably go to UNA. For real.

Don’t sleep on community colleges and junior colleges. Depending on what you want to do those are fantastic options.

Where are you seeing 30k for AU? The total cost for instate directly from AU.edu is about 14k total. That's a damn steal. Out-of-state has always been double.

ETA

Unless you are posting annual cost. 30k annual is a great deal.

I have a younger cousin that went this route (JC) in IT and he is making over 125K at 35. My wife's nephew went to CC and got into defense manufacturing, and likewise makes great money for his age and has traveled all over the world.

She identifies the problem without knowing it. As long as the feds hand out tens of thousands to anyone who wants to major in apparel design or some other unmarketable field, colleges will have every incentive to keep increasing tuition.

Yea, I think they are looking at annual cost.

It is kind of a silly article. Not that it isn't pointing out some issues in how expensive college has gotten, but Alabama and Auburn are basically the same. If you go by the university websites for in-state students, the numbers are basically the same. AU does have slightly higher fees that Bama does, Bama's base tuition is higher.

Past that, you are really just getting into cost estimates of living/eating/books and crap. Not to say that the numbers aren't staggering, it is just silly to be singling out Auburn when the rate increases are basically the same.

Tuition only is about 15k yes. But food tickets, dorms, books, fees, all add up to 30k per year. So unless you live in Auburn or Opelika you have those other expenses

They are over $30k if we are using the same metrics of AU being over $30k.

Bama estimates total direct and indirect cost for undergrad in-state is roughly $33k. Auburn is $35k.

But to clarify I was listing total cost per year for average students that would be living on campus and taking a full class load

If Auburn is like Bama only freshmen are required to buy those food tickets.

I’m listing the cost in the real world not off a website. These are the numbers I have from financial advisors at the universities. My AU student son is right at 34k, my son that will go to Bama is just a hair over 27k

Somewhat. Freshman it is required. There are still required meal plan you have to buy every year, but the amount is much lower. I think off-campus the plan is like $400

I mean, the financial advisors are the ones that are compiling the numbers on the university's website. Alabama estimates the cost to be $33,452. Auburn $35,298.

It may come out different based on what you are able to find regarding the variable costs of living, food, etc.

ETA: Auburn's estiamtes seem to be pretty accurate to what your son actually incurred. I guess we will see if the Bama estimates are accurate or the financial advisor's. I'd be curious to see how that comes out because that would be a pretty damn big variance between the two schools.

Meal tickets are the way to go for sure if you have boys. Saves a ton of money in the long run unless your kid likes cooking all the time. 18-22 year old boys eat a fricking ton of food about every 4 hours

Yes they are fairly close if you are saying 4-8k is close for annual cost. Every plan is going to be different based on what the student will need but those are the basic cost per year for a normal plan. GoCrazy not wanting to argue every fact but I currently have a son at AU and I have a son going to Bama next fall. So I have personally been through the detailed aspects of each for multiple schools. I’m not just chunking out numbers out of my arse. It’s roughly high 20’s for Bama and low to mid 30s for AU.

No, i'm saying they are close based on the University's estiamtes, they are roughly $2k different from each other.

$8k would be a huge difference between the two, which would be attributed almost solely to the cost of living/indirect items. So, that is what i'm curious about.

I get that and i'm not trying to argue. It is something that i'm genuinely curious about because that is a really big variance from the University's estimates. I'm interested to see how it plays out, noting that one is based on actual numbers and the rest are estimates. If the cost of living in Auburn is $8k more than Bama for a student, that would honestly shock me.

JSU in my opinion is the best bang for buck. I think most students could get in for around 18k total per year. Now are the greatest school for engineering, doctors, or lawyers nope. But jobs in nursing, PT and many of the jobs kids are looking to get into with a 4 year degree they rank fairly high in state

Auburn is currently more expensive per year than Bama. It can vary like I said between $4-8k higher depending on what you choose but if you are looking at equal to almost equal type plans say you choose meal tickets, books included, tuition, mid lower tier dorms with a roommate it’s gonna cost you about $4k more to attend AU per year
