NYD is perfect? Can be hungover or continue drinking and watch meaningful football all day

It's because the Rose Bowl is one of the playoff games. They will never give up the NYD slot

Rose Bowl insists on always being on New Year’s Day, so when it is one of the playoff games then the playoff games are on NYD.
On the other years it is on NYE or Dec. 30th depending on what day they fall on.

All bowl games that matter used to be played on January 1.
At first it was the Rose, Cotton, Sugar, and Orange. College football season ended when the Rose Bowl clock struck 0.
There’s not much good left in college football but putting the big games back on Jan 1 is one of the few.
