Agree with you but don’t you think the 13th ranked team will be melting next year? Same as the 5th ranked team today.

that melt was honestly fair
I'd melt so badly too if we were 13-0 and got left out despite having the better metrics than 2 of the teams that got in
this is FSU's 2004

The solution 4 conferences of 20 teams. That’s 80 teams. If you aren’t in the top 80 teams you probably will never win a national championship anyway. Whatever you want to call those 80 teams FBS or whatever. Then have the next left out in their own division that plays for their own championship. Maybe they decide to drop down to FCS or not… doesn’t matter.
Divide each 20 team conference into 2 divisions. From the previous season inside the conference rotate each year back and forth home and home and play 1 cross division team, and all 9 of your divisional teams. Cross division would be 1v1, 2v2, etc from the previous season to keep a healthy rotation of champs within conferences . Setup an 11 the game out of conference but against a power 4 conf opponent. And allow everyone to play down 1 opponent each year essentially that wouldn’t count more like and exhibition game since winning will be decided on the field. Each winner of the divisions go into an 8 team playoff. The first round of the playoff is the conference championships. That leaves 4 teams to go to a final 4 type at rotation locations.
That takes any opinion out of who should be in or out and everyone plays by the same rules and you must win to get in

You’re overthinking this. D2 and D3 already do this along with every high school in America.
This is the correct answer. I played D2 ball. We had a 16 team playoff. The country was divided into 4 regions. The top four teams in each region got in. In each region, 1 played 4, 2 played 3. Then, those winners played. After that, we played the winner of another region. The two left standing faces off in the championship game. Four game playoff to win the national championship.
They have expanded since I played, but the basic premise is the same.
FCS does something similar.
They could draw it up tomorrow. But, there is one small thing standing in their way. Big money. There is big money that is tied to these bowl games and these schools. I believe that the money men are the ones making this needlessly difficult.

Bowls could still get great matchups outside of a real playoff.

I think last night, we saw what some of the playoff games will be like with Iowa and Louisville. Bad football. Sure there will be a few good games but there will be more bad ones
This is exactly what it will be. In the vast majority of years, only two teams really should have been playing for a NC. Now, the bloated system will create more mis-aligned matchups. People complain and say they want more football. In reality what they’ll get is more background noise.

The ACC is down. There is nothing wrong with the Iowa team nor the Big10 championship. Iowa has the number two team defense right.
There will be lots of noise but there will be first round upsets too. There will be the occasional UCF-Auburn type games.

The sec is way down this year. Defenses were bad. QB play was bad overall. Look at the sec’s out of conference record anyone that played anyone lost. Seriously is the Auburn over Cal the biggest out of conference win? It might be

It’s said and done now but FSU being left out this year is worse then Auburn being left out in 2004 and that situation ultimately got us to a playoff to begin with.

Gotta check myself. It would have to be UK over UL

Only myself and Corch have offered a solution. Both of ours are about the same. He wants 4 conferences with 20 teams each (2 divisions per conference). I suggested 2 super-conferences with 36 teams each (4 divisions per conference). It all works out the same way no matter which route you go.
Both of our systems can find a conference champ and a national champ with a single 8 team play-off. And neither requires a committee.
The only thing is the will to do a conference realignment. Getting all 72 or 80 schools (or however many) to agree to realign is hard. But it could be done if the schools get paid. Corch's suggestion of 4 conferences might be easier since you wont have to shuffle around as many schools.

They got it right this year.
People will still bitch, but I’m looking forward to the 12 teamer especially since bowls are already meaningless

I hope so. A true playoff is the only way to go.

It is easy now to say the committee got it right but it wouldnt have hurt my feelings if they left the SEC out. Now that they left FSU out they shouldve put Georgia in.
At the end of the day they broke precedent by snubbing an undefeated P5 conference champion. They could have left the precedent be.

Do we need a solution when a 12 team playoff begins next year?
The only thing that bothers me a little is giving first round bye games. Players get hurt and that is a massive advantage to not play in the first round.

Yes there will always need to be a solution when you have a committee determining who is in or out…
Set the rules of how to get in the playoffs if you do that you’re in if you don’t you aren’t.
The whole eye test bullshite and who’s really the better team blah blah blah shite wouldn’t happen we would t even need rankings.
The who is the best team argument got dumped on it head in front of everyone with Washington beating Oregon, Bama beating Georgia. Remember just 1 week ago Georgia was the “best” team and Bama 8th. Now Bama is one of the top 4 and Georgia isn’t.
All that to say opinions shouldn’t matter.

The problem with the playoff committee is that the criteria is subjective and apparently optional, since they disregarded head to head matchups (Texas vs. Alabama) and comparative outcomes (Florida State vs. LSU and LSU vs. Alabama). There is too much power among the Committee and not enough of a system of checks and balances on that power. It’s wild to me that Condi Rice has a say in who ends up getting to be a college football champion.
I don't think bama deserves to be in, but conversely, FSU is down to a 3rd string freshman QB. Not sure why we are going to a 12 team playoff. Seems to me that 8 would have been better.

The simplest solution is the committee stick with the precedent that undefeated P5 champions matter and then point out FSU didnt schedule Citadel, Louisana Tech, and East Kentucky as their OOC opponents and show their attempt to form a formidable schedule despite their recent weak conferemce performance I believe stability couldve been had.

FSUs 2nd string QB would have been back for the playoffs. He looked fine in his 2 starts. He was out of the championship game under concussion protocol. Brian Kelly should take notes
