I don't know if Nelson will go to the pro, portal, or stay in Bama. But if he can improve his perimeter shooting, he could be the team's best player next season.

That's because he hasn't developed Major conference-level ball handling and perimeter shooting.

[Negative post warning]

And yet, there’s probably even odds that the first Bama shot of the game will be Nelson jacking a 3 with Bacot standing 8 feet away from him clogging the lane.

If he hits it, he’ll shoot 8 more and make one which means he’s 2-9 and no one to rebound the misses (likely meaning we lose).

If he misses, we’ll start running our actual offense but be down a possession. This might be the best outcome, but I wish he just wouldn’t shoot it and instead try to set screens and get offensive rebounds (or even use some post moves on Bacot to try and get him foul trouble).

I think there might be something to the conspiracy I saw on Reddit about how they were going to do this just because if they fired him Louisville would have him under contract within 24 hours

I mean, if Auburn wanted to hire Avery Johnson, i wouldn't have been mad at all. If he's not good enough to be your coach and you think he's an underachiever, why told you give a shite if they hired him. If you think he sucks, you should be thrilled your rival hired him.

The best result would be if Nelson attempted 3 3-point shots and succeeded on all 3, but as you say, that would be a very low probability.
Ultimately, it is the coach’s choice and ability. As you say, coaches may choose the offense that has the most success.

Estrada is my key player for tomorrow night. When he's scoring, we are at a different level on the offensive end. Especially if he's hitting 3s. At this point I'm not counting on Trelly to play. So Estrada and Sears will be playing extra minutes. At this point I think we know what we will get from Sears, he just needs 1 running mate to give him some support and a chance to take a possession or 2 off every now and then.

If he hits it, Bacot can't stand 8 feet away clogging the lane anymore, and our offense opens up. That's what Oats wants.

Nelson was never a great shooter, and a lot of people have put unrealistic expectations on him. I think he can shoot a little better than he has, and that would help us. But he was never going to be a 40% guy.

Bacot will force him to make 2 of his first 5 shots before taking it away. If he hits the first, Bacot will let him miss the next 4-5 if he keeps shooting. If he goes 2-4, then Bacot will have to respect it for at least several possessions.

Nelson’s shooting 26.5% from 3 this season, and that includes a bunch of games in a familiar home gym with significantly less pressure. Even if he shot 30%, that’s only 0.9 PPP with virtually no chance at an offensive rebound (unless Pringle or MoD are in the game with him). Even 33% and 1.0 PPP probably doesn’t cut it against UNC. If they’re smart, they’ll double the screens he’s involved in, sag off him if he’s in the corner, and leave him wide open until he hits at least 2 of the first 5 he takes.

Here’s hoping he has the best game of his life, or just doesn’t shoot it to start the game until he seems like he may have an in rhythm 3 and is used to the gym (or just not shoot a 3 at all).

I mean his 3p% has gone:
35%
32%
27%
27%

That's not good. Nelson at 35% completely changes our offense. Hell Sears only hit 35% from 3 last year.

Yep, that’s 1.05 PPP with no O-boards. If you assume just 10% O-boards on his misses, that goes up to 1.15 PPP which is winning basketball.

I said back in November/December that Grant jacking 3s in March probably isn’t a winning strategy for us and still believe that to be true.

On a positive note, the posts about Oats understanding the tired legs is a HUGE DEVELOPMENT! Even with SDSU’s physical defense, I don’t think we shoot 11% from 3s on 27 attempts after several days off if Oats understood our guys needed more rest (it’s almost unfathomable that we shot 3-27 in that game).

And his use of TOs to stop runs quicker was much improved last game as well!

There’s literally only 2 things left, out of bounds plays (although he clearly saves a few for NCAAT) and offense/defense substitutions at the end of games (includes using TOs to make that happen).

We all need to keep in mind that Oats is still very early on the learning curve for major college BB. If he is open to learning, which he now appears to be more so than the first 2 or 3 years, we're in for some serious fun over the next 10-15 years.

It’s not just a strict PPP thing.

1.15 PPP doesn’t fully explain the impact it would have from a spacing standpoint if he’s dragging a rim defender 25’ from the basket has on other players ability to convert at the rim.

Completely agree. Was just pointing out the PPP (or the efficiency of the shooter) has to be high enough to force the defense to want to take it away, opening things up for others.

NEWS: Florida guard Riley Kugel is entering the transfer portal, a source tells me.

Kugel is a former 4 Star recruit from Orlando who played two seasons for Todd Golden at Florida.

He averaged 9.2PPG, 3.6RPG, 1.6APG and 1.1SPG for the Gators this season. Significant portal addition.

Our doctors have always been very conservative on when an injured player can come back. Remember several years ago when we had a football player that our doctors would not clear due to something related to his heart.
Was it Baylor he transferred to and got cleared immediately?
