Brock Bowers might need tightrope surgery for his ankle.

That would end his season. Read it is a 6-12 week use of crutches before going into a boot for a while.

I have no idea how they work. The only broken bone I’ve ever had was a fractured rib from getting drilled in the ribs by a returned pitch in intramural softball in Athens, when I was pitching for some reason. This was obviously the drunk league.

This was after a brief stint at first base where I got pissed because nobody could make an accurate throw to a 6’5 first baseman, so I ended up at short stop. There’s a reason you don’t see many tall short stops…but if I got the ball at least I could throw to 1st.

This was a Russell Hall dorm team. God what a great time.

Pretty sure tight rope surgery is to speed up the recovery of a high ankle sprain and get you back in 3-4 weeks as opposed to 2 months.

Spoke to a couple sources about Bowers. Here is the situation...

I was told tonight that tight rope surgery was recommended to Bowers and his family today. That is the same procedure that Amarius Mims and Lawson Luckie both underwent recently to repair their high ankle sprains. The average recovery time is 3-6 weeks, but that timetable can vary depending on numerous factors.

Kirby Smart said Georgia thought Bowers had suffered a lower ankle sprain in his postgame press conference in Nashville, but he stressed that the full diagnosis wouldn't be known until after further imaging had been done.

“It’s an ankle sprain,” Smart said. “Don’t know how severe. X-Rayed it, and X-Rays were negative. It looked like it was lower, but we don’t know. Until we get an MRI, we won’t know..."

A source added that the way UGA braced Brock's ankle for the trip home was consistent with how a lower ankle sprain is treated.

That's why it was a bit surprising to everyone when the recommendation was given for tight rope surgery.

Brock and his family have decided to get a second opinion and see what comes out of that conversation. A source said the following about Bowers...

"He is exactly like Chubb was. Brock and his family have already decided that he's going to go with whatever option will let him get back on the field the fastest. All he wants to do is play football for the University of Georgia."

I have been told that a final decision on how Brock will move forward will be made on Tuesday.

I don’t know Graham at all. Is this solid? I’ve seen no other best writers running with this yet.

He says he has sources inside the program. He has been correct on several things like this before..has also been wrong though

Other folks have said he hasn't even had a MRI yet due to the swelling.

Based on all the scuttlebutt I'm just mentally prepping myself that we won't see Brock again prior to the playoffs if we make it, and anything prior to that woudl simply be a nice bonus.

In 2013 when we lost Gurley we had Keith MArhsall and JJ Green which obviously weren't as good but they were adequate and we also had a killer pass game
In 2014 when we lost Gurley to suspension (and later injury) we stil had chubb and michel
In 2021 when we lost Pickens we still had plenty of good receivers behind him plus a strong run game
In 2022 when we lost AD Mitchell most of the year, we again had plenty of weapons and a strong run game

This just feels a little different. It feels like this is going to be devastating to our offense. Boy I hope I'm wrong.

After a syndesmotic injury is diagnosed, a decision on surgery is made with the patient. Sometimes, these injuries can be treated nonoperatively with an extended period of limited weight-bearing immobilization in a cast or a boot. Oftentimes, surgery is recommended for athletes in an effort to shorten the rehab and return to play timeline. Previously, this surgery involved using 2 metal screws to stabilize the fibula to the tibia. These screws are rigid and would have to be removed at a later date, thus requiring a second surgery. The tightrope allows the syndesmosis to be stabilized in a FLEXIBLE manner, keeping the natural motion between the tibia and fibula. Since the fixation is flexible, there is no need for a second surgery. Rehab may begin much faster and return to play may happen as soon as 4-6 weeks. This timeline was made famous by former Alabama QB Tua, who played in the national championship game just 28 days after surgery on his syndesmosis.

3-6 weeks is about the best we coudl possibly hope for and I'd thank my lucky stars if that's the case. If that were to be true, he would be back in time for:

3 wks- Mizz
4 wks- OM
5 wks- UT
6 wks- tech

We don't really need him for tech but a 3-6 week time frame would let us have him for the SECCG assumign we win the east. Honestly that's all that REALLY matters (aside from streaks which we love of course)...if we lose a game but still make the SECCG if we win that we're 100% in the playoffs assuming there aren't 4 undefeated P5 champs.

Unless my math is wrong, a 3-6 recovery would be best case return set at Ole Miss. assuming the 3 week count starts at the date of procedure.

I think it maybe just as likely, like you said, that we don’t see him until SECCG or potential playoff semifinal.

Just sucks to have heard low ankle sprain and anticipation of him potentially back for Florida/Mizzou to now having a decent chance not to see him until December.

Sorta surprised he wasn't on a knee roller vs crutches to keep weight off of it all together.

I figured Dr. Ron would have him on stem cell injections, drinking the best most potent breast milk while sitting in a hyperbolic chamber inhaling nothing but pure oxygen. But I'm not a Dr.

Definitely have some time to get 4/6 up to speed in the playbook. Assuming a lot of our packages and game plans revolve around #19

Also, I’m just gonna resign myself to assuming if we have a major player/Heisman contender HE WILL Miss time his final year here. Not that he would have won it anyway

We can run a slot receiver in a lot of the roles Brock played. Will miss out on some of the blocking and size, but pick up some speed. Not a plug in replacement, but not an immense drop off. 6 can do a lot of that.

A lot of those mismatches were getting Brock matched up with a LB with the motion. We can still do that with 6
