But there was 1 other thing I had to ask Mullen as he enters his second season away from coaching — if Marco Wilson doesn’t throw a shoe against LSU in 2020, is he still at Florida?

“Probably, yes,” Mullen told SDS on a recent episode of The Saturday Down South Podcast.

Who's to say Florida wins the game if the shoe isn't thrown?

Grantham

That alone is a firable offense, at least as a coordinator.

While the shoe throwing itself isn't the exclusive reason for the firing, it did alter the trajectory of things. The narrative would have been different with a win.

He was fired because like tRant has always claimed: he’s arrogant, hates recruiting, makes boneheaded decisions + held onto Grantham too long.

He would still be here if he fired Grantham in the offseason. Either the offseason before or after.

I think he lost the team making such a drastic change midyear.

And any time the coach loses the team, you cannot keep him.

I never understand why coaches make this jump from a school with mid-level expectations and high pay to a place where you make a little bit more but expectations are unrealistic.

I imagine it has more to do with reaching the pinnacle of achievement in the sport. Maybe he could have reached it at State (he did get to #1), but the odds were greater at Florida. Sometimes being the best matters more to people than comfort.

He got fired for lack of recruiting which led to him being 6-7 (2-6 Conf.) and probably hanging on to Grantham too long.

This is the correct answer.

to be fair I think he answered it in a fair way. If that shoe isnt thrown yall win that game. Which may or may not have saved his job.

Not exactly a for sure thing , considering it was a tied game and very little time left

That is correct, we missed a 51 yard FG to tie the game right at the end, so not sure we would have won without the penalty.

He could have retired there and they would have even built him a statue. He was already making millions. I never understand why coaches make this jump from a school with mid-level expectations and high pay to a place where you make a little bit more but expectations are unrealistic.

A little bit more?

The money he made at UF it would have taken years to make at State. Throw in the that little 4 year contract rule, I can see how all would jump from Mississippi.

Mullen's original contract was 36 million for 4 years. It would have taken him 6 years to get that. He then got an extension through 2026 making 7 million a year. So now, Poor little merlins is making 7 million a year not to coach plus a 12 million buyout. He wouldn't be making that at State.

Wow. All that interview did was make him look like a tool, and his Mississippi State response sounds like sour grapes.

Mullen really had an opportunity at MSU to take them to the next level. I enjoyed watching him develop that program and tap into the talent pool. MSU has really had some bad luck with coaches. Mullen leaves and then the Pirate passes away. Unlike Ole Miss, their fans really deserve better.

MSU fans would take him back and ... I damn sure wouldn't blame them.

State fans tried to tell yall he was a lazy recuiter. All the responses were Florida recruits itself, Mississippi State sucks he can recruit here, he can throw a quarter and hit 5 5 stars at florida.

AHAHAHA

Dude is such an egotistical asswhipe. Facilities were being updated the entire time he was here. He’s just making excuses like he always has instead of admitting he doesn’t work hard enough. He also all but basically said college takes too much effort now I like the NFL schedule.

He only got the buyout. He doesn’t get the remaining years of the 7 million plus buyout. A buyout buys out your contract. It was actually quite cheap to fire him. He only got the 12 million.

The reputation they used to have was a lot of outside interference from the boosters. Is that still true? I don't know.

This has literally never been true. If anything our AD’s have to much control. You’re describing Auburn. Are you confused?
