First thing freeze said at his presser after scrimmage

quote:

Freeze said his team was “flat” in the scrimmage today. He didn’t like the energy level.

quote:

Freeze said there were SEC officials at the scrimmage and boy there were a lot of penalties. A lot of holds and pass interferences, he said. No alignment issues for the most part, just small penalties to clean up. There were a few big runs called back for holding penalties.

quote:

Only turnover was a Payton Thorne interception during the scrimmage. Thorne was 12/17 with two touchdowns and an interception. Seems like a better overall effort than last week.

quote:

- Freeze speaking highly of wide receiver Shane Hooks. He had some big catches and Freeze said the wide receivers were better today than last week.

quote:

Freeze does still note a few routes run incorrectly. That was an issue last week too. Still some issues to clean up there.

quote:

- Jeremiah Cobb had the most carries in the scrimmage but “all of them ran the ball well.”

quote:

- Camden Brown had a touchdown catch today.

quote:

Freeze said Izavion Miller has been a standout in camp and its been hard to keep him off the field. So that led to some of the new offensive line combinations with Gunner Britton shifting inside to left guard. Britton has played center too, at points.

quote:

- “He’s different,” Freeze said of Robby Ashford. Ashford’s best three practices have been the last three days after Thorne was named the starter. He believes Ashford will keep pushing Thorne. Talks about Ashford having a role on this offense and getting touches, but not much specificity on what the scope of that role would be.

quote:

- Freeze said the defensive backs have been better this week in their tackling. But noted the linebackers and defensive front have not always gotten off blocks well. Said getting players out of yellow jerseys (notably Austin Keys) will help.

quote:

- Brian Battie will be Auburn’s kickoff returner to start the season, Freeze said. Noted Keionte Scott will get punt returns and Caleb Burton too.

quote:

- Freeze said he thought Thorne didn’t press as much as he did in the last scrimmage. Said Thorne had about two bad decisions on the first two possessions but was “solid” and “settled in” after that.

quote:

- After he challenged the defensive backs earlier in fall camp, Freeze said he’s seen a lot better practice this week from D.J. James and Nehemiah Pritchett. They have All-SEC potential, Freeze said, but he needs to see them practice like that. Freeze called out those guys, and it helped them “flip the switch” this week. That then translated to Jalyin Simpson and Zion Puckett. That veteran group of defensive backs had been coasting through practice at first, Freeze said.

quote:

- Keldric Faulk and Jalen McLeod both were not able to play in the scrimmage. Neither did Koy Moore or Austin Keys. Wide receivers Malcolm Simmons Jr. and Nick Mardner both didn’t play.

quote:

- Stephen Sings V had at least one sack in the game today. But Freeze said much of the pass rush came from the defensive interior. Not having McLeod didn’t help.

quote:

Ashford finished having gone 8-for-15 with a pair of touchdowns, while Geriner went 7-for-11.

A Hugh freeze QB is good for 1 interception a game historically so this doesn’t surprise me.

I will be so mad if Thorton does this. Britton is not a guard. If Miller is that good then move him to guard.

If you asked me to pick 1 player who would lose their starting job this year I think it would be Puckett.

Just for practice, Britton has played that position through spring and fall, they arent moving him. However, someone needs to get practice at the tackle position in case one of our tackles go down.

My favorite Britton quote when asked about trying to decide where to transfer..."You know we played here when I was at Western Kentucky, 89,000 screaming fans....and then they let that eagle fly, and I said....this is what college football is supposed to be".

In scrimmage they are supposed to be trying things they need to work on, hell if he was 17 for 17 with no int we probably would not have learned anything.

Good to hear the receivers are getting their decision trees correct, its just a fork (two options) we arent asking them to solve chaos theory.

This is a perfect offense for Thorne to shine, its going to be an exciting season.

Tear them down all summer and fall, mold them, then last 2 weeks prior to the season build them up it’s as old as coaching itself.

That’s why you can’t assume anything when it comes to QBR. Who knows maybe Robby’s 2 TDs we both rushing. Maybe Peyton’s other TD was rushing. No yardage in as provide what if Peyton’s reception went for an average of 3.8 yards and Ashford went an average of 16.2. Would be a huge swing in the ratings.

I think the entire thing in the presser for Robby about his best 3 days of practice was a pep talk that we haven’t stopped watching and we need you. Every teams needs their backup QB to be ready to win games for them.

He might. OL is far from settled. In a good way though.

I have no issue with Miller starting, but even though Britton has put on weight he's still our lightest OL. He will get ran over by good DTs. Miller is much built way better to handle OG.
