Pistol Pete was there before Dale

I am a fan of Dale but LSU basketball goes back farther

Pistol scored like a madman, but didn't make the NCAA tourney once. It was more like a sideshow at a carnival, come watch Pete score.

Dale built teams that contended with Kentucky for the SEC title regularly, and was in the NCAA tournament almost every season. Multiple Final Fours. 17-1 conference record and a 1 seed entering the tournament in 81.
That's worth a nod and a mention, considering the rest of LSU's history.

Hell probably the biggest thing for LSU sports was Huey.

For football, yes, easily. He got Tiger Stadium built, using funding intended for student housing (that's why the stadium had dorms in it).
Basketball and other sports, not so much.

LSU football also benefitted from WWL being a Clear Channel station. LSU played at night, and WWL could be picked up over a large region of the country-
quote:

At night it can be heard across much of the central and southern United States, and, with a good radio, as far north as Minneapolis.
I've heard older people say they listened to LSU games in St Louis, in the 50's.
Again, that wasn't so helpful to basketball, other than overall name recognition of the university.

Yes, DB overachieved a few times in his 28 years at LSU, but you can count them all using one hand. I remember Bobby Knight saying something like “I was worried that we were going to lose the game, then I looked over at Dale Brown and stopped worrying “

The guy made like 12 straight NCAA tournaments; he likely wins a Final 4 if his best player doesn’t break his thumb in 1981. Tell me which team besides the 1989-90 team significantly underachieved; I’ll wait for your answer. No doubt 1986 and 1987 significantly overachieved. Between 1979 and 1987 LSU was eliminated by the eventual national champion five times in the NCAA tournament. Look at any other period of LSU basketball and find anything resembling even close to that kind of success.

What about my boy Fess Irvin?

Your boy Fess and Jose Vargas were pretty much the entire bench. Fess played really well against Indiana until he pulled a string on the free throw late.

I haven't been to Kings Island in a few years

I was talking about Coney Island, it was in Cincinnati on the river

I think they moved to whatever town it is in now northeast and called the new place Kings Island.

As a UC alum you should know they award a bunch of scholarships every year in his name. That is why I am trying to remember the venue in Cincinnati where they have a big tournament there. Like PGA equivalent in tennis.

Beast was old school coaster all rickety and clickty clack type coaster.

Cincinnati guy in G town, are you a Bengals fan? I thought they closed that place awhile back.

There are a lot of “young” fans that weren’t even born when Brown was making magical runs. They make negative posts on here because they jump on bandwagon or don’t like Browns current outspoken nature. I was going to games in late 70’s and throughout the 80’s and witnessed all the amazing accomplishments. I also witnessed the epic fails. I have fond memories of it all and appreciate what Dale Brown did to make LSU fun and relevant during his years as coach. Good Luck Bama rest of season!

To answer the original question, there is a segment of Tiger Ranters who feel that Brown helped push Wade out because he was afraid of Wade threatening his legacy. That and the fact that he and Vitale are good buddies.

Not as well known to me

My old man and Rupp had chilli together like twice a week at the old Brookings before they tore it down. Real hole in the wall greasy spoon but like the old Loudon Square Buffet it was full of all types. From Willie the Wino up to the governor and went in and out of that place.

You just don't get that at chains like McDonald's today.

Back in the day everybody really did seem to know everybody. It is why I always loved the SEC, wherever I was there were extended family and friends. I know you think austin is cool and hip but my favorite SEC city is Starkville. It may not have the most things to do but it really has the best people.

Coney is a water park now. I enjoyed their rides as a kid but they're gone now.

I'm aware of the Arthur Ashe Scholarship. I believe it is for minority athletes. I believe the tournament you are thinking of is the masters or open but it is not in Cincinnati. It is in nearby Mason. My mom attends it. Its actual name escapes me. Maybe the western open.

Love the Bengals and Reds. Sadly I missed the glory days of the Big Red Machine but hopefully, Burrow and Chase will give us some fun and hopefully championships.

When did they take them out? I thought they built Kings Island in the 60's or 70's. Did Coney keep going? The big fire changed Cincinnati, weird but things were different after that. Everybody seemed to know somebody who was there that night.

Yeah, Big Red Machine was the nails, too bad you missed it. Probably missed Bogart's and the old Fibber McGee's. Upstairs was the best place to see an act and downstairs was the best place for a good old fashioned drunk.

I'm not sure when Kings Island was built but it has always been around since I have.

They dropped the rides at Coney a few years back but it's still going as a water park.

Did you know any of the Bengals or Reds?

The old guys - I have been in Brown's limo, it was pretty sweet. My last time up there for any time was back with Chris and Boomer.

I actually was entertained by Marge. May not have believed in some of her thoughts but at least it was entertaining, not like these modern corporate owners with about as much personality as white bread.

Not sure if the Celestial is still in business but that was the best service I ever got at a food joint. Smaller world back then, but Cincy was a lot of fun back in the 60's and 70's. Playboy had a club up there around 6th street across from a really good Chinese food joint. Not sure how old you are and if you remember Blondie but their lead singer was a bunny in that club.

Back in the old days Newport was pretty mobbed up going back to Prohibition.
