First impressions of Montgomery offense

I went and watched a couple games of Montgomery’s offense. Base run game is zone, split zone, outside stretch zone, with some speed sweeps. Appears he wants a power run game but the team struggled running power. I think smaller backs with good vision and speed would work best for the overall offense but there is a spot for a power back as well. We need a diverse group of backs to really make the run offense go.

Passing game is similar to Freeze a more complex route tree and combo routes than what Malzahn ran. Same as Free in passing concepts to be one side field reads with combo routes to put defender in single coverage or choosing what guy to jump in zone. One side field reads does not and repeat one side field reads do not mean basic means your 1,2 and possibly 3rd read is all on one side of the field with multiple reads. The passing concepts have a lot more crossing and drags them from Malzahn. A lot of the concepts put eye candy in front of the line backers and safeties to put them in conflict to cover their area or cover the person they see in front.

This is the first basic breakdown for now. I’ll try to watch more but very encouraging offensive design. A lot will depend on many variables how well it works in year 1 depending on oline, QB, and WR play. I could see where any position on offense would attract top personnel.

I will also look deeper into the Freeze/Montgomery offense after A-Day on their base concepts.
