As Texas A&M showed everyone this year, you need more than recruiters. You actually need coaches to teach Xs and Os
Montgomery coached with Briles for YEARS. He ran the Baylor offense and coached RG3. He’s a very well regarded offensive coach.

Yep, I get it but from what I have been able to find is his getting 3 stars and a couple of 4 stars...

Maybe because he is at Tulsa, a tiny AAC school. Not sure Saban is going to get 5* to flock there.
Its probably one of the hardest jobs in CFB, and he was the only coach to get them to the AAC so not every season he had was bad.
We also aren’t hiring him to be the HC or even a recruiter….we have plenty of those. We need a potent offense, and Freeze + Montgomery will be electric.

Even Baylor historically has not recruited that strong….its why coaches like Briles, Rhule, etc were great fits for it.

Montgomery is an obvious home run for oc especially when freeze is already here

Watched a few videos on Montgomery I like his energy. He likes those shallow crossing routes that Bama kills people with. Sign me up

You can find 20 minute entire game replays from 2013 at Baylor. That was a high powered offense with Bryce Petty at the helm. (Seastrunk sighting too...)

haven’t really been doing it for OC because I think no matter who it is, it will be Freeze’s offense. But as you wish

He was “co-OC” from 2007-2011 and HC from 2015-2022. So keep that in mind.

Efficiency:
2007 - Houston - 42nd
2008 - Baylor - 16th
2009 - Baylor - 69th
2010 - Baylor - 18th
2011 - Baylor - 2nd
2012 - Baylor - 4th
2013 - Baylor - 3rd
2014 - Baylor - 4th
2015 - Tulsa - 50th
2016 - Tulsa - 33rd
2017 - Tulsa - 69th
2018 - Tulsa - 115th
2019 - Tulsa - 86th
2020 - Tulsa - 81st
2021 - Tulsa - 80th
2022 - Tulsa - 64th

Scoring:
2007 - Houston - 23rd
2008 - Baylor - 42nd
2009 - Baylor - 101st
2010 - Baylor - 36th
2011 - Baylor - 4th
2012 - Baylor - 4th
2013 - Baylor - 1st
2014 - Baylor - 1st
2015 - Tulsa - 21st
2016 - Tulsa - 7th
2017 - Tulsa - 54th
2018 - Tulsa - 103rd
2019 - Tulsa - 84th
2020 - Tulsa - 74th
2021 - Tulsa - 81st
2022 - Tulsa - 54th

What happened to him from 2017 on? His offenses looked pretty strong until then, and then bam, he looks like us.

Think it’s a combination of him losing some really good talent and just not being a very good HC.

I see this argument quite a lot. However that recruiting class that was the best thing since sliced bread was only a year ago. How many times do we see multiple first year out of high school guys make a significant impact?

I don’t care if you have the best Xs and Os coaching staff on the planet. Expecting a group of freshmen to waltz in and dominate is setting your expectations up for failure.

Now if they still look like garbage at the mid to late point of their second season out of high school then that stance holds water. As it is, those young men were in high school this time last year.

That’s quite a jump to the SEC I don’t care who you are or how many stars are by your name.

Pretty sure the highest rated class in history mixed with some upperclassmen should have still been able to handle App State.

The two previous classes where top 10. (8th and 6th) composite. They had plenty of talent. You need talent (ingredients) and how to coach them and put them in the right place. (Chefs) to make it all work.

Yep, people get caught up in the last class but aTm has been stacking solid talent for a while.

Spot on!
He is from the Briles, Freeze, Malzhan tree. Excellent hire to develop QB. Bitching about not having one for 20 years. Possibly get one of the best... and we still bitch! Ground work being laid guys.
The ole man's shtick is getting stale in T-town.
