Why don't we have an intermediate passing game?

I see teams lining up in similar formations to ours quite frequently. Tonight the Patriots have lined up several times with an H-back or an offset TE. They've ran slants, drags, and posts from several positions in this set. Why can't we do this? Petrino seems to wear it out with these simple passing patterns.

I don't want this to be a flame thread, but I feel like Gus used to run these types of things yet they've disappeared for whatever reason. Though I'm not sure why, as these are simple and effective routes to help the QB, no matter if he's a statue or a DT playmaker. I seriously just do not understand. I'm aware that this is an impossible question to answer without Gus' direct input, but I guess I'm just asking for the hypothetical reasoning behind his thought process in your opinion.

Probably because he doesn't trust anyone on our team to throw them. Speaks very ill of JF3 when someone whose primary contribution to the offense is passing isn't trusted to pass and beats him for the spot.

OL can't block against SEC/ P5 caliber DL. We have to use extra blockers to make sure the rush does not get to the QB. After that then it is easy for defense to cover a limited amount of options.

Because we have no QB development.

The problem isn't as much as the QB, but the O-Line. Many of our lineman miss blocks and the blitz gets to Sean way to quick. However, a good counter to that is having a quarterback more flexible and more agile to move out of the pocket like a Deshaun Watson or a Lamar Jackson. So we have a great quarterback, but only when we get our blocks.
