Teams everywhere START true freshman QBs. He needed the reps, in case Stidham goes down. And we have Gatewood coming in next year and probably Nix the next. Redshirts are kind of dumb these days anyway. You think if Willis tore it up his second and third year, he'd be back for his senior year? Nope

Not really bothered by it, but I doubt it helps us in anyway. If JS goes down we were and still are not good enough to beat anyone who matters. Most of the TF QB's who come in an play these days were much higher rated prospects with a much longer list of accomplishments.

That being said his physical talent was impressive. No idea about his arm talent. He clearly didn't have a great grasp of the limited O they let him run. None of it was a surprise, but IMO playing him isn't some sort of wonderful thing "in case" we need him in the future. Bottom line if we need him this season, we are in trouble.

Only reason it hurts is because stidham is a sophomore himself. So if the guy is for real your relegating him possibly to 1 year as your starter.

But I agree with the decision to burn it

I don't get why anyone is worked up about it. How many QBs do you see stay 5 years these days?

The only person/persons that were "upset" about it are the alters and "Fire Gus" fans. It is absolutely the right call and needed to happen once Sean White went all Sean White on us

No way you have a program without a back up QB being prepared..

IT was the right call and he should continue to get reps every time its possible

In my decently long life, that is one thing I think we have historically done a piss poor job of.....getting the #2 QB ready for when it's his time.

I thought burning the redshirt was the right call. Have you slept yet? Time to stop melting.

AS would the little bitch who was complaining about it. They would have roasted Gus for not getting him ready''

I do not mind being a part of a good coach roasting, or even a AD roasting, when its necessary. But what some of the people did here the last two weeks was just childish. So you handle them like children.

It doesn't bother me at all. Honestly, red shirting outside of someone like a kicker that you don't have to have is a useless thing since kids jump at the chance to go early if they are good enough.

Gone are the days when you have a junior quarterback making his first start in college with a rare exception. If the are good enough, play them. If they are a second stronger, give them game reps as much as possible without taking away needed reps from the starter.

The last QB that left Auburn as a senior that had a chance to play the next year anyway was Jason Campbell. Red shirting QBs is dumb unless you just don't need them at all

The last QB we redshirted that was still with the team in his fifth year was Neal Caudle, whom we signed in 2006. The last QB who actually started his fifth year on campus was Brandon Cox, part of the 2002 class.

I'm more unhappy that Willis didn't play against GA Southern. He should have been the legit #2 coming out of fall practice, assuming the coaches knew about White's issues.

not me, I think it's one of the few smart decisions coach dumbass has made in a long time. he must have got the talking to after one of our previous offensive shite shows.

still trying to ride the backs too long but he is getting a little better. when you have as many quality backs as we normally have no excuse for guys not to get a blow at least every 4 or 5 plays. keeps fresh legs in the game.

Yep. It is not like we have benefited by red shirting QB's in the past. Just play the best guys you have THIS YEAR and bring more guys in.

Willis needs the playing time. He has a long way to go.

Exactly. I understand other programs that don't recruit at an elite level to redshirt kids and build for the future, but that isn't the case here.

To be fair, it's also not like we've benefited from playing true FR at the QB position either

We are not really playing them. We are training them. Just in case. And that is always a benifit

he does but I am watching the end of the MU game now and his skill set is what we need. He seems quick right now but can run the ball and sling it a bit. Once the training wheels are off and he is able to throw the ball down the field the defense will have to respect both his feet and arm and he will be good.

I also will say this after watching the game, Pettway might be a third best back so far this year behind KJ and Kam. Pettway really looked slow the last couple games and really looked like he wasn't into it.
