Gus Malzahn is a good offensive mind with SEC experience (he spent 8 years at Auburn). He is now at UCF and has done pretty well. He just knocked off Luke Fickell this weekend. You can do worse than Malzahn but he doesn't overly excite me.

above Freeze on my list

The problem is his defenses suck. At some point you're going to get in low scoring defensive games and Lane will lose those almost every time.

Question, what if Cadillac goes undefeated and wins the Iron Bowl?

Lane

Rhule/Prime

Grimes/Freeze

After Kiffin it's just pure speculation IMO. I think if I was Cohen and Roberts, after Kiffin any of those 4 could win the #2 spot via a strong interview/pitch.

If that happens, he’s more than earned the job. And this is Auburn, so quite literally anything could happen. But I just don’t see it. Major deficiencies in depth, talent, and now a mostly interim coaching staff. It would be miraculous if he pulled it off. It’s more likely that they finish 1-3, and even Western Kentucky will be a challenge I fear.

Some things AU may have in its favor: 1) the new $90M football only facility and 2) Saban in 71 years old. It is my opinion that AU should seriously consider Dave Aranda. He is young, energetic and proven. He will be very successful at AU.

When it's all said and done I think Matt Rhule is the best option, mostly because he was an NFL head coach. That is a huge thing to recruits, imo. Plus Rhule can actually coach.

Rhule has a history of turning teams around.

quote:

Dan Mullen is still a good X's and O's guy and a good QB coach, but he is a retread. His problem at Florida is his recruiting sucked and he didn't even seem to try (much like Harsin). We don't need that problem again.

Mullen burnt bridges during the Cam days. No way anybody should get behind him as an Auburn coach. He's weird, can't/won't recruit. Harsin 2.0

quote:

I would be fine with Prime and it would never be boring with him around. Prime also could be had for a low buyout. Problem is he isn't really a coach and has little experience at it. His success would depend solely on crootin and on who his assistants are. Prime, however, is highly competitive and hates to lose, so he would definitely give it all he has. Plus I think Bo said recently he sorta likes the idea of Prime at AU.
This is where the wheels fall off. Putting all your eggs in a basket, based on who he might hire, and implying his recruiting will be off the charts. There is so little evidence either of these would happen, based on the miniscule time he's actually been coaching.

quote:

Freeze is better than what we had, but I just do not like the guy. Not because of the hooker stuff, but I just cannot stand his personality. He is one of those "preachy" prosperity Christian people that are really annoying. He is a lot like Jimbo Fisher - when you hear him talk you just think "this guy is a used car salesman." Freeze can back up his talk, but he still annoys me.

I get the negative about Freeze, but there is no doubt he can coach, develop players, and recruit. Excellent offensive mind, but unlike Kiffin, has good defenses.

Speaking of Kiffin, he's the media darling. But if you review his resume, what has he actually ever done? He was OC on some damn good teams, but when given the keys, he never got it done anywhere. Throw in the fact that he quit on TN and raced out of town, and quit on Saban a week before a Natty game. That guy screams flake.

In my humble opinion, of all the guys out there, Rhule is the best option. What he did as a college coach was pretty amazing. Took two bottom dwelling programs and brought them back.

Freeze had some good defenses at Ole Miss.

On a side note, we had Gus who was an offense guy. But his last few years, it was the defense that carried his teams. Weird.

Well now it's legal!

Not like everybody else wasn't doing the same stuff he was at the time. Just got caught. So much smoke was coming out of Tuscaloosa back then, you'd have thought the whole town was burning to the ground. Yet, the NCAA wouldn't dare touch that golden goose.

Kiffin, Aranda, Fickell. Maybe Prime. Unsure on Rhule.

Maybe Prime bc I just see him as a gamble, and maybe I’m listening too much to the people who are saying “if it turns sour it will be a powder keg”. Man he would be exciting though.

Unsure on Rhule because I don’t know if he has what it takes for the SEC.

Miss me with that Freeze ish.

Only top tier candidates that legitimately excite me are Lane and Prime.

After that, give me my wildcard. Brian Hartline.
