My mom was born in AU. Tried to have me in AU as well. She was living in Florida at the time and came back to her parents right before I was supposed to be born. She was going to AU so I could be born in AU. Unfortunately I was impatient and came 4 days early and fricked it all up.
Parents took me back to AU when I was 2 for my first game.
Grandfather graduated from API after his stint in the Navy for WW II is how it started I guess.

Easy. 1989 Iron Bowl.
Our neighbors were/are Auburn alums and fans. They had/have boys about my brother's and my age. They invited us to go the game with them. We didn't have tickets. The plan was just to be there and watch the game from their RV. My brother and I were casual Bama fans (no one in our immediate or extended family ever attended college).
Everything that day was electric. The fans, the team, the town.... Everything. It was truly different than any other game or event that I had ever been to before or since. Anyway, about 30 mins before kickoff a guy walks into the RV to use the restroom. He sees my bro and me sitting there and asks us if we are going to the game. We said no and were just happy to watch the game from the RV. The guy uses the restroom and leaves.
About 5 mins before kickoff, the same guy comes back into the RV. He hands my bro and I a ticket to the game and tells us to have fun and "War Eagle!" I guess I don't have to tell you what tickets were going for that day. I still to this day don't know who that guy was, but his simple act of kindness changed my life.
From that day forward, I was an Auburn man. From that one man's charitable act, both my bro and I attended Auburn being the first in our family to ever attend college. There is something different about Auburn, it's fans, the school, the town.

Was indifferent towards Bama/AU since mom went to Georgia choosing between Auburn, Alabama and Cornell
Cornell costs about 50-60k/year
Got full rides to Alabama and Auburn. Auburn offered about 1000$ more for a laptop. I chose Auburn.

No one in the history of my family had ever gone to college. I was the first, so my family up until that point had no specific college allegiance. Now my granddad and uncle (on my Mom's side) worshiped at the altar of the Bear.
I was more influenced by my Dad who (at that time) liked and pulled for ALL southern teams, but had more of an affinity for Auburn (since my Dad was from Columbus GA where I grew up) and Georgia Tech.
After I got in high school, I noticed that more and more of my friends were going to Auburn. After I decided I wanted to study engineering and after visiting Auburn a number of times during my high school years, it was an easy choice. I graduated 2nd in my high school class and UGA reps kept calling me and sending me letters trying to get me to go to UGA, but I was never even vaguely interested. Was a little interested in Notre Dame (I'm Catholic) after I had been accepted there, but didn't want to go that far away from home. I got letters from Vassar asking me to apply there (this was only a few years after they had gone coed which would have been interesting ). But UGA? No fricking way, never a chance. They weren't even close to being a SECOND CHOICE.
My first year at Auburn, the same year that UGA won their last championship (against the easiest schedule ever in the history of NCAA football competition) sealed my new-found hatred for UGA. My first Iron Bowl sealed my hatred for Bama. My entire family shortly followed suit. Now it is orange-and-blue through and through for all time.

I sure as hell wasn't an athlete.
(The Navy thought enough of me to give me a scholarship though. )

Nice story about the GOAT, December 2, 1989.
No atmosphere for any sporting event in the United States will ever match the atmosphere of that day. Ever. Dead serious too.

Truth.
The atmosphere of the 1989 game was unreal. The long-term impact of the 1989 game was greater.
But the 1982 game? That one still stays with me because its the game that Pat Dye and his Tigers utterly changed the mental make-up of the Auburn program forever. We were no longer just gonna "scrap" or "try to compete". We were gonna fricking WIN.
Iron Bowl record since (and not counting) 1982? 17 wins, 14 losses.

I was born in 1991 a third generation Auburn man. My grandfather was a 2 sport letterman at Auburn in the early 50s in tennis and golf because he was FAF. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't a diehard Auburn fan.

When I evacuated to Auburn for a hurricane in 2005. First college campus I had ever seen. Just knew it was the place for me.

Being a graduate of a private college in MS, I was a free agent SEC fan. I've always liked Auburn from way back in the Bo days, and got the chance to play college ball with a great group of guys who played with Jason Campbell at Taylorsville. My sister married an Auburn man and he and his merry band of hardcore Auburn tailgaters welcomed me with open arms--something I've never witnessed amongst State and Ole Miss fans. When I found out that this iconic photo was taken at Auburn at my BIL's tailgate (two wayward gentlemen with whom I attended high school), my fandom was solidified:

I was at that game too, but I was eleven. I remember asking my dad "what the heck is a terrapin."

Spring 2005 acceptance letter. Visited AU first out of the colleges I was going to visit. I shut it down after that. I knew where I was going.

My dad was an Auburn grad so I grew up with Auburn but I also grew up in Brazil so the only way to see a game was for someone to send a VHS tape. when I was five I remember my family going to someone's house to watch the tape of Auburn beating Bama and if I am not mistaken it was the 1982 IB. I fell asleep but I can still remember one play but otherwise it was the excitement about Auburn.
When I was a kid I remember going to J&M and seeing all the memorabilia, which was ruined years later when twice the owner was a #### to me as a student. From then on it was campus or Anders bookstore if I needed anything.
