re: What's your take on UAB's situation?

I sincerely hope that the outrage in Birmingham parlays into firing President Watts and finding a way to split from the UA system and become the University of Birmingham.

The UAB football is losing money excuse is a crock of shite. Something like 20 athletic departments in the entire country actually make money. The reason you have a football team is because the exposure you gain from a D-1A football program is priceless for the University and the rest of the AD. It's worth the spent money for the school.
The football team itself was just turning the corner competitively with Bill Clark.

If UAB was able to go through with its plan for an on campus stadium and improving the campus then that is good for the entire city of Birmingham. Anybody in the greater Birmingham metro should support that whether you're a Bama fan or not.

I have a feeling this is just the start.

Get ready for the next phase of athletic cuts. Eventually uab undergrad experience will dissolve and it will purely become med student only

Then I'm sure the bot will rebrand the hospital as Paul Bryant Jr hospital

Totally different matter. Teams still play nonconference games in November in football. That's normal. There's a reason ND has been in the Big East and now the ACC in hoops.

All 4 are conference games by design. UNC plays nothing but conference games once January 3rd rolls around. Same goes for almost 99% of college hoops.

Free UAB

Real question as I am young and don't know how this works completely. Would it ever be possible for UAB to separate from UAT completely and join auburns system for support? (Hypothetical)

UAB started a football donors program at the beginning of this year, so it didn't have time to start bringing in huge amounts. A donor/alumni 2 weeks ago said he would give $10 million and the powers that be turned it down. This was not a decision made this year. This was planned years ago and no amount of money raised or donated since this all started was going to change it. They could have been pledged $30 and it wouldn't have mattered. They would just brush it under the table like it didn't happen. Coach Clark was hired with the intention of running the program into the ground and in 3-4 years cancel it. But little did they know he was a damn good coach and could turn it around. The BOT saw this and panicked so they pulled the plug now instead of waiting 3 years when they could be a 9+ win football team.

Ok I guess I just want to have hope for UAB. I went there for a short time but loved it down there.

I haven't read the last 4 pages but this is my take on it. I graduated from AU and have a second degree from UAB due to living In bham and it being the easiest option. I think academically it blows UA away. With that being said I've seen people mention how this hurts the city which it absolutely does.

I never went to a game as legion is In a terrible area and I'm frankly not comfortable going to that area.

Bham is trying to build all these new restaurants/bars and social areas. Well a stadium for uab could have been the hub for such an area and really brought a ton of economic growth to the area.

I live In TX now but feel bad for Birmingham as many would like to see a quality football game when they can't make that trek to AU or UA. I know I would have.

What you are saying is the truth. My wife was assistant prof at UAB, it was getting to the point of the new leadership's actions (disdain for Honors Program, De-emphasis on undergrads, and isolation of medical school) that she started applying for new positions.

That is why i am freezing my arse off in Pennsylvania now. I had to give up my teaching job, but she just did not like where the future of UAB was headed.
