Wesleys Boobie Trap is still alive and kickin. When I was a kid right beside Green Top was a place called The Old Saw Mill. It burned down when I was 10 or around that. It looked like something out of a movie where everyone fights and just all around debauchery. I always wanted to go in that place and lament that I never got the chance.

Sho'-Nuff BBQ in Alex City was my favorite as a kid... big sandwich and stew was hard to beat.

Sam's BBQ in Montgomery is by far the best place in the city

I agree about Whitt's. Was solid and better than BBG's IMO.

Chicken Comers is my favorite. I think they closed in Phenix City, but the one in Columbus is awesome. I know it's GA but just barely.

Simmons BBQ in Guntersville has pulled pork so good you can literally feel your arteries clogging. Their sides kind of suck so I stick to the sandwich when I eat there but if you are ever over this way it makes a damn good lunch.

Came here to say this. Sam's is great.

Fat Boy's in Prattville isn't bad.

Full Moon has been mentioned in Birmingham. I also nominate Demetri's but I might be in the minority there (also that place might be closed by now).

Saw's is legit. Pretty good selection. Boudin was actual boudin (haven't found many places in AL that make the real thing).

If you're on 280 and coming through Childersburg, Natch's isn't a bad place. Their smoked turkey is really good.

Only had Dreamland in Birmingham and was disappointed.

And let's be real, the only reason to go to Jim n Nicks is the cheese biscuits.

Chuch Wagon BBQ in Madison, AL is about the best in North Alabama. Gibsons is very overrated to me. I just don't understand the love it gets. But Saw's is my clear cut #1

I lived 15 seconds from Miss Myras when I lived in the Ham. Walking out on your back porch and smelling that every day was a wonderful thing.

It is still open. My grandfather knows the owner real well. It was in a rut for a long time, but the past few years they've turned everything around. I had the ribs about a month ago, and they were very good. I generally judge my bbq joints by their ribs.

One of the best places in Birmingham is right off 280 by Greystone, in the Cowboy's gas station parking lot. It is called the Georgia Pit and they smoke with pecan. Their meat (pulled pork, conecuh sausage and ribs) is usually outstanding and the spicy sauce is awesome. I haven't had anything bad there despite it being in a trailer in a gas station parking lot.

I think the main thing with BBQ is everyone likes different types of meat and sauce, so you are never going to come close to any consensus. It's rare to find a BBQ place that does all types of meats well, so most places aren't going to be awesome for everyone.

With Gibson's I think the standout is the chicken and white sauce, which most people aren't going to think of as a go to typically. I would agree that Gibson's beef and pork are merely decent, though it's been a long time since I've had anything from there.

I need to try and hit up Saw's next time I'm visiting friends in Bham. Typically just wind up hitting Full Moon, which I enjoy their pull pork sandwiches. Much better than Jim and Nicks, which is worthless for anything but the sides and cheese muffins.

Yep. Hell, I have a friend that judges bbq joints based solely on their pie. I hold his opinion in extremely low regard.

I judge a bbq joint based solely on their ribs. I believe it is the hardest bit of bbq to do extremely well, as it is one of the most delicate cuts to cook without drying it out (here's looking at you Bham Dreamland) or not injecting enough smoke into it. I'm a fan of all types, so it doesn't matter if they are wet or dry rub. All that matters is the quality of the meat.
