Let's not be naive or short memoried, it went down precisely how you should have expected it too.

Defense wasn't our problem, and it's in better shape than before.

At whose expense? We have Holsey back and 3 promising young safeties in Matthews, Nick Ruffin and Stephen Robert's who all have shown promise at safety, hit hard, cover well and have size (minus Holsey)

Even if we make him a nickel safety, that is situational and would compete with guys like Monty Atkinson and Richard McBryde plus those other safeties depending on the situation.

It sucks. Irvin showed promise. Luckily it looks like quality competition not turmoil caused this

Holsey can't stay healthy, Roberts has been underwhelming and in and out of the dog house, and Matthews was basically invisible after the Louisville game. And I doubt Atkinson or McBryde would have beat out Irvin. He would have gotten plenty of playing time next year, good system fit or not.

Irvin was beat out by the end of the year at primary safety spots and relegated to nickel/rotational guy even after Matthews injury. He was beat out once by these guys but

So we are just going to ignore that he injured his shoulder in that game, eventually was forced to sit due to injury and had surgery?

He finished very strong and not in dog house. Either way, new coach

So are you writing Lawson off too

Irvin isn't big enough to be a hybrid LB/S playing in the box regularly. He loses playing time on those downs.

Optimistically he would have gotten 30-40%. He isn't elite in pass coverage and 190lb players can't last a full game in the box.

Does a quality player want to settle for 30-40% snaps for at least 2 years?

Anytime a DB goes unrecognized it's usually not a bad thing. It seemed like QBs chose not to throw his way

I hate this, he probably will go to SCAR to follow T-Rob. And he has enough money to pay his way and sit out a year.

Look, Irvin was a gamer, plan and simple. I would really like to know why he is transferring out. Doesn't make since. He played plenty, wasn't afraid to hit someone, and he would have only gotten better over time. Really hate this.

Would love to get some more info on this as it just doesn't jive.

It doesn't jive that a new coach who didn't recruit Irvin may not be in love with a 5'7 190lb player that isn't exceptional in coverage?

Seems like we should have expected this

Guess you did not watch Mathews play much last season. He sucks and if afraid of contact.

You mean when he played through a shoulder injury that required surgery and missed multiple games due to an ankle injury?

Brannigan, this is weak by your standards

You'd be afraid of contact due if you had injured your shoulder to the point of needing surgery. Before that he was known as a very heavy hitter in his first year at UGA.

Won't happen. He and T-Rob had a falling out, apparently during the LSU game, and never really made up. He'll probably end up at either Miami, ECU (where his old HS coach is), or a nonP5 SoFla school.

Good kid; didn't understand how he fit into this system. He's not really a nickel and he's not big enough to play safety IMO. He's a hard worker and a fine athlete, though.

Holsey is a huge question mark. Played well as a freshman but have injuries caused him to lose a step? He couldn't make a move in the depth chart this spring.

The last staff wanted Nick Ruffin to take over the 3rd safety spot behind Mathews and Rudy. He never could for whatever reason. He was a high profile recruit but that hasn't translated to Auburn yet.

Roberts looked good towards the end of the season. He also made some bonehead plays early that got him benched by Muschamp.

To be fair he was injured in the Louisville game and never healed up. Tried to return in the UGA game with bum shoulder

I might catch some heat for this, but you could really tell he had an injured shoulder against LSU. He even had the visible shoulder brace on.

Why else would he do this?

he couldn't make a move six months after tearing his acl while sitting out all contact drills?

It seemed like nobody wanted to hit Buga that day.
